INTRODUCTION

The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-26 (NATO reporting name: Babayaga) is a high altitude, Beyond-Visual-Range, interceptor meant to go into full mass production unlike it's sibling, the MiG-31. Design began in 1982 with the first flight taking place in late 1987. It was meant to bolster the Soviet Union's aging fleet of aircraft with a suite of advanced sensors and powerful radars and still be easy enough to manufacture in large enough quantities to establish complete Soviet air superiority. Unfortunately for this aircraft, funding for it's large scale production and further development dried up leaving only 117 airframes constructed by 1991. The MiG-26 here was the last one of it's kind to be produced and served with the Polish airforce until the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
