The C.15 Hornet is the Spanish designation of the McDonnell Douglas F/A-18A (EF-18A) in service with the Ejército del Aire y del Espacio (EAE). Introduced in the mid-1980s, the C.15 has for decades served as the primary multirole platform for national air defence and for joint/coalition operations.

Like the AF-18, the C.15 preserves the “true multirole” concept — rapid transition between air-to-air and air-to-ground missions — but the Spanish version underwent local modernizations (mid-life upgrades) that updated avionics, data buses, self-protection capabilities and compatibility with modern weapons. Documented changes include radar upgrades (AN/APG-65 V3 in upgraded aircraft) and certification to employ weapons such as the Taurus cruise missile.

Key features (C.15 Hornet — EAE)

Modern digital avionics with HUD, computerized navigation systems and upgraded data buses for integration with external pods and sensors.

Multimode AN/APG-65 radar (V3 variant on MLU/updated aircraft), capable of managing air-to-air and air-to-ground functions simultaneously.

True multirole capability: interception, air superiority, precision strike and close air support.

Integration capability with targeting/search pods (FLIR/targeting pods) and ECM/warner suites to improve tactical awareness and the employment of guided munitions.

Armament (example based on your specifications)

Short-range air-to-air missiles: AIM-9L Sidewinder.

Medium-range air-to-air missiles: AIM-120 AMRAAM.

Long-range/stand-off air-to-ground precision weapon: Taurus.

Targeting pods for designation/search and employment of laser-guided bombs and improved identification in night/adverse conditions.

Operational role and strengths

The C.15 combines the Hornet’s manoeuvrability and reliability with local upgrades that extend its operational life and effectiveness in modern combat: a balanced solution for national airspace defence and expeditionary coalition operations. Spanish upgrades have allowed the type to remain current in critical areas such as avionics, precision-weapons employment and NATO interoperability.
