MU586

After the plane took off, the captain noticed that the front landing gear indicator light had not turned from red to off, indicating that it could not be retracted. Therefore, the captain notified the Hongqiao International Airport control tower, and the tower agreed to the plane's return flight. When it was confirmed that the front landing gear could not be retracted or lowered, the crew attempted to lower the front landing gear in mid air. They first lowered the aircraft, climbed it, and then slid sideways with a small radius, but were unable to lower the front landing gear. Afterwards, the captain instructed a maintenance officer to inspect the condition of the landing gear. The maintenance officer wrapped himself in a rope and took the risk of sticking out of the front landing gear compartment door, using an axe to strike the area where the landing gear malfunctioned, but no looseness was found. Then, the captain landed with the rear landing gear, but there was still no response, resulting in an emergency landing. At 10:10 pm, both the airport and the aircraft began to prepare for forced landing. The flight attendants on board appealed to passengers to move to the rear of the aircraft as far as possible. The aircraft circled overhead to consume fuel. The airport runway was also sprayed with fire foam to reduce the chance of fire. At 11:7 p.m., the plane landed on the runway sprayed with fire foam at the front end. The captain first let the rear landing gear touch the ground, then the nose rubbed on the runway and pulled a spark with the ground. When the plane taxied to 380 meters, the plane finally stopped. After the plane stopped, passengers left one after another. Firefighters sprayed water onto the plane to prevent a fire and assisted passengers in leaving the scene. Nine people fell and injured themselves while leaving the plane due to a leak in the escape slide.Screenshot20250503230445.jpg

MU583

On April 6, 1993, a McDonnell Douglas MD-11 aircraft with the serial number B-2171 operated by China Eastern Airlines, flying flight MU583 from its stopover at Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport to Los Angeles International Airport. At 7:10 pm Beijing time that evening, the plane was cruising in the airspace near the Aleutian Islands, approximately 950 nautical miles south of Shemia, Alaska, USA. The cruising altitude of the aircraft is 33000 feet and the airspeed is 298 knots. At this moment, a crew member accidentally touched the control handle of the slats, causing the leading edge slats of the aircraft to lower.
Due to the swept wing design of the aircraft, the moment generated when the outer slats are lowered forces the aircraft to lift up. The autopilot's control of the elevator was unable to counteract this upward trend, causing the pitch angle of the aircraft to increase to 9.5 degrees, triggering a stall warning.
At this point, the on duty captain disconnected the autopilot and manually operated the aircraft. He attempted to make modifications while retracting the slats. His operation caused the aircraft to enter a severe pitch oscillation, which lasted for the next 13 seconds and repeated three times between nose up and down. At its most intense, the pitch angle reached 24.3 degrees down. After this series of oscillations, the plane lost an altitude of about 5000 feet and its speed suddenly increased to 364 knots, triggering an overspeed warning.
When the altitude dropped to around 28000 feet, the pitch angle of the aircraft gradually stabilized under the control of the captain and gradually returned to a slow climb altitude between 5 and 8 degrees upwards. After the slats were misplaced for 94 seconds, the captain turned on the autopilot again. The plane climbed again to 33000 feet under the control of the autopilot. Due to passenger injuries, the crew declared an emergency situation and made an emergency landing at Shemia Air Force Base about 2 hours later.Screenshot20250503161655.jpg
