First flown as "Yellow 9" of the 9th Staffel of III/JG3, Bf-109 F4 Werknummer 7640's last flight in German colours was during May 29th 1942, piloted by Petty Officer E. Volkmann, alongside his wingman Corporal A. Kuhn.
The two aviators ran out of fuel and lost their bearings, and were forced to make an emergency landing in Chuguyev. There, the two 109s landed in Soviet territory, and were captured by the Red Army and sent for evaluation. As a goodwill gesture, one of the Messerschmitts was sent over to the United States after one of the American's own test 109s got damaged.
There, it was given the serial code "EB-1" (later changed to "EB-100") and repainted with USAAF insignia and camouflage. It was extensively tested by the Air Technical Service Command from Eglin AFB in Florida. Its fate is unknown, but it was presumably scrapped after the war.
