Aircraft info

The Yokosuka K5Y (Kyusanshikichukanrenshuki, Type 93 Intermediate Training Aircraft, Allied reporting name: "Willow") was a two-seat unequal-span biplane trainer that served in the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II. Due to its bright orange paint scheme (applied to all Japanese military trainers for visibility), it earned the nickname "aka-tombo", or "red dragonfly", after a type of insect common throughout Japan.

About Indonesia as Operator of K5Y1

Indonesian People's Security Agency and later Indonesian Air Force operated derelict aircraft against Dutch colonial rule. On July 29 1947, the Indonesians using 2 units of Yokosuka K5Y (Called "Cureng/Churen" by Indonesian fighters) with one "Guntei Bomber" (Mitsubishi Ki-51) from Maguwo Air Force Base, Yogyakarta for bombing Dutch strategic positions in Ambarawa, Salatiga and Semarang. On its original plan, Nakajima Ki-43 "Hayabusa" also planned to be involved too in this operation, but cancelled as the aircraft suffered technical difficulties. It is currently on display at Yogyakarta (Dirgantara Mandala Museum)

Bit History of 29th July 1947

On July 21, 1947, the Dutch reneged on the Linggajati Agreement by launching Dutch Military Aggression I. Dutch planes continued to bombard strategic targets belonging to the Republic of Indonesia. Apart from causing casualties, these attacks cost Indonesia many airfields and the planes they owned. The operation was originally an idea to take revenge by launching air attacks on the Dutch-occupied areas, but this operation was rejected by several Air Force officers. Then the operation was approved by KSAU Commodore Suryadarma and KSAU Deputy, Air Junior Commodore Halim Perdanakusuma, approved them even though they did not order the operation.

The operation began on July 29, 1947 at 17.00 with the target of Semarang and Salatiga. This operation initially used the Guntai dive bomber, Hayabusha fighter, and two Cureng basic trainers, but Hayabusha was unable to carry out the operation due to a damaged Synchronization gear. The number of bombs carried initially amounted to 800 kg of bombs and 2 wooden boxes containing Molotov cocktails, each aircraft, namely 2x 50kg Cureng and 1x Molotov cocktail box, 4x 50kg Guntei, 2x 250kg Hayabusha, but changed to 300kg because Hayabusha failed to fly. After carrying out the briefing, the cadets aired at exactly 17.00 with the help of car lights parked on the edge of the runway as taxi way lights and the spotlight of an airplane parked at the end of the runway. After being airborne, the group then headed to the intended city, but one of the cureng was separated from the group and took the initiative to bomb the Dutch headquarters in Ambarawa. The group succeeded in bombing Dutch headquarters in 3 cities and returned to base safely.

Amazing, i have to say! My only peeve is the pitch. Not really effective, and causes it to roll 90 degrees when going level.
