You were right about the shapes of these craft being difficult to make fly. This Slave 1 (Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back) does not fly in the original orientation.

Activation 1 to enable rotation of nozzles (linked to pitch).
Activation 2 and VTOL slider to rotate guns.
Activation 3 and VTOL to open missile bay doors.
Activation 4 to fire missiles (best seen from cockpit view).

Notes: Although no landing gear this best takes off straight down the runway, although you can try a vertical take off sd well. With the Activation 1 on, Slave 1 becomes highly manoeuvrable at low speeds, however not in the sense of a fixed wing aircraft.
