According with Oberkommando des Heeres order from 14 September 1943three KW I was repaired by the Pz.K.Werk Riga and issued to Pz.Berge.Kp.4 to recover and tow Tiger and Beute-Panzer. The first of the three KW I is completed and to be immediately picked up by Pz.Berge.Kp.4 in Riga to be used to recover Tiger in the A.O.K.18 sector. After it is completed, the second KW I is to be used to recover Beute-Panzer in the A.O.K.16 sector and the third in the A. O.K. 18 sector. Two days later, based on previous experience in recovering Panzers, OKH has decided that Beute-Pz.Kpfw. KW I are to be used as Bergepanzer. When still present, the weapons, the turret, and the gun are to be left on to increase the traction weight and also to be used in defense of the Bergekommando. Use of these KV-1 as Bergepanzer is decisive because of the shortage of equally heavy and suitable German towing vehicles for recovering heavy Panzers. And 25 October 1943 Beutepanzer KV-1 and T-34 located in the Pz.Inst.-K-Werk Riga are to be rapidly outfitted as Berge-Panzer for H. Gr.Mitte. Those Beute-Panzer that can still be used as fighting tanks are to be rapidly repaired and issued as follows: all KV-1 to H.Gr.Nord and all T-34 to H.Gr.Mitte to outfit Beute-Kompanien and as Berge-Panzer.
