Brief History

Description
The Mk 82 Low Drag General Purpose (LDGP) 500 pound bomb is fitted with a Mk 15 Snakeye fin assembly and is an air dropped, free fall, aerodynamically streamlined, non guided weapon. The bomb casing is made from steel, is conical in shape and has provisions for both nose and tail fuzes. The bomb casing is equipped with two suspension plugs and the charging receptacle well plug. In operational use, the Snakeye fin assembly is folded in the unretarded closed position and is kept in position by a release band which is spring loaded. The fin assemblies have drill holes at the top and bottom end for the installation of arming wires when configured for an electric tail fuze. The weapon is painted olive drab and has a single (inert) yellow band painted band across the nose cone. Markings - 500 LB MOD 1; CU FT 3.3.

The Snakeye has been in combat service during the Vietnam, Gulf Wars and Afghanistan conflicts by Canberra bombers, OV-10 Bronco COIN aircraft, F 111, B 52, F4 Phantom, F 16 and F 15 multi role aircraft.
