The EA-4F Skyhawk, operated by Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron 33 (VAQ-33), represented a specialized variant of the renowned Douglas Aircraft Skyhawk series. Designed for electronic warfare and training missions, the EA-4F incorporated significant modifications to support advanced electronic countermeasures and jamming operations. Though based on the proven A-4F airframe, the EA-4F shifted its focus from strike missions to the vital role of electronic support in modern naval operations.

Powered by a Pratt & Whitney J52-P-408A turbojet engine, the EA-4F maintained a top speed of 670 mph (1,079 km/h). Its compact size, excellent maneuverability, and rugged design made it ideal for carrier operations and aggressive maneuvering in demanding training and simulation environments. While its offensive payload was reduced to accommodate electronic warfare equipment.

Key features and upgrades in the EA-4F included:

Specialized electronic warfare equipment for jamming and radar simulation.

Retained the distinctive “Humpback” avionics pod atop the fuselage, housing advanced electronic systems.

Strengthened landing gear for reliable carrier operations.

Modified cockpit systems to support EW operators and mission specialists.

Enhanced survivability features, including improved ejection seats and cockpit armor.

VAQ-33, known as the "Firebirds," utilized the EA-4F extensively in its role as an aggressor and electronic warfare training squadron. The aircraft provided realistic threat simulations, allowing U.S. Navy crews to train against sophisticated electronic attacks and radar threats. The EA-4F’s durability, combined with the expertise of VAQ-33 personnel, made it a crucial asset in preparing carrier strike groups for the evolving challenges of modern warfare.
