Fairey Swordfish Mk. I 'Stringbag'

25.4k Scriefers  8.9 years ago

~~~~Hyper-Realistic Series~~~~
Group 1 = Torpedo
Groups 2-6 = Rockets
VTOL = Gun turret control
The Fairey Swordfish was a torpedo bomber biplane used by the Royal Navy during the Second World War. Along with the torpedo bombing role, it was also heavily utilized as a reconnaissance and dive bombing plane. The mark 1 entered service in the 1930s and by then was already being updated and modified. One modification included the addition of float pontoons for the purpose of catapult-assisted water take-offs from warships.
Despite being an obsolete craft compared the era’s standard of aircraft design, the Swordfish was extensively utilized in the war effort and accomplished notable success in multiple theaters of the war. As a workhorse of the Fleet Air Arm, it was capable of bring outfitted with a wide range of armament and equipment. In fact, the craft earned its nickname the “Stringbag” not because of all its cables and struts, but because of the seemingly endless variety of stores and equipment that the aircraft was cleared to carry. Crews likened the aircraft to a housewife's string shopping bag, a common item at the time which could accommodate contents of any shape.
This is essentially my Mk II Swordfish with added bells and whistles and updated aesthetics. She is equipped with pontoons so she requires a water-borne start. New to this variant are 8 rockets underneath the low wings, a new era-correct paint job, redesigned propellers, and improved field-of-view from the cockpit.
She flies great at max throttle when fully loaded with rockets and torpedo. However, when the weapons are deployed, the shift in CoM causes her to nose up. So simply throttle down to around 60% and you’ll be golden!
Keep in mind, extreme maneuvers may cause rapid decreases in airspeed and ultimately stalls (especially after the CoM shift once the weapons are fired). Make sure you have room to recover if you enter a stall!!
Enjoy!! And as an aside, I'll be going out of country for a week so I don't think I'll be able to upload any planes during then… But rest assured Scriefers will be back with your requests!!!
    Scriefers love this plane. BTW can u make a Su-47 Berkut? I don’t see that many forward-swept wings here
    @Bostin20 Brush up on some of your historical planes. The String-bag came in pontoon and wheeled variants. I built the wheeled version before this one (check my planes). And I built them months ago before all these new pieces and propellers came out (hence the jerry-rigged dummy prop). I probably won't make updated versions of these with the new pieces, but you're more than welcome to reupload these with any improvements you can make!
    Needs improvement but the design is good and the detail great but add landing gear and a working prop not a dummy prop then I'll upvote @Scriefers
    @Geebers Yeah upload it as unlisted and post the link to the plane here (or private message me on reddit with the link if you don't want others to download it prematurely).
    @Scriefers sorry, but Ive never done that and I'm not sure how to. Do you choose unlisted?
    Actually, not quite sure how to make it private, it says unlisted and public. Sorry!
    @Geebers A combination of both. I clipped nose cones into one another by re-positioning them via XML modding. Upload your plane privately so only I can download it and I'll put an insignia where you want it.
    @Scriefers I have a question for you. How did you get the RAF insignia on the plane? Modding or clipping? I need a RAF insignia but I can't seem to get one to come off in 1 piece. Thanks!
    @Astron1 Modifying the XML file of the plane and using detachers as the launching mechanism for the missiles (wing pieces).
    It flies like a charm but where did you get the missiles? I had been looking for some missiles for a while since I can't build them successfully. Do you know where you got them?
    Play around with the blades' position, angle, and size. The weight of the blades also contribute to its spin speed. @PlanesOfOld
    Mine are the same but yours spin up a lot faster I will have a think about it @Scriefers
    @PlanesOfOld my props utilize the plane's airspeed in order to spin. I don't use vtol nozzles to make them spin (I'm not a fan of flaming propellers lol). Mine are just wing pieces attached to a freely spinning rotator. The trick is that the blades of the propeller have to be a certain width to catch the 'wind' and make them spin. The downside to my prop design is that they don't spin until you achieve a certain speed. So during takeoffs, the props don't spin...
    @JMicah4 for me it's all about trial and error. A lot of error... It takes me hours to get one aspect of the plane just right. So my best advice to give is have patience and keep trying to improve your build style.
