MQ-2 Drone

19.6k StockPlanesRemastered  16 hours ago

The Drone, Or as i like to call it, the WeTAT, - Weapons Training Aerial Target- First entered Simpleplanes service 9.3 years ago with the combat update. Resembling the General Atomics MQ-1 Predator, it's main role is as a target drone for weapons training missions.

Trivia About the Drone:
-Despite being 4.2 feet longer than the MQ-1, the Drone has a wingspan that is 11.4 feet shorter, with a much more powerful engine, making it more maneuverable.
-despite being based on the Predator, It does not have a camera turret.

About this build: I started off with an upload by DanDaFreakingMan, and made several changes to it. pretty much the entire fuselage is all new, featuring cut pieces at 25 percent to capture that squashed egg look. It features a custom AN/AAS-52 tracking and FLIR turret that weighs in at 130 lbs, (will be replaced by a true targeting pod for SP2) and a true to power and weight Rotax 914 engine with actually calibrated auto prop (also getting replaced as the rotax 914 is actually a car engine). The rest of the build is built to scale and weight meaning it has an empty weight very close to 1130 lbs altogether. While I'm certain the real one could do much better, This build can get between Wright and Krakobloa with only 20% of the currant fuel load. It should also auto spawn.

The below instructions assume you're clean (no weapons)

Cruising on autopilot: Set throttle to 80% and trim nose up to between 50% and 75%. It will slightly climb at 110 mph.
Cruising off of autopilot: same as above but use between 25% and 50% trim nose up.
Economy Takeoff: see Cruising on autopilot - set flaps to notch 3
Landing: set flaps to notch 3, Maintain 70 mph approach. throttle as needed.

Weapons: You get three new missiles that were inspired by but did not use WBD. On the left wing is the (2x) stinger air to air missile a lightweight but low impact missile derived from a shoulder launched homing version of the hydra 2.8in. rocket. On the right is the Hellfire Anti Tank missile, and the Griffin precision strike missile. Since all 3 IRL are based on the Hydra70 I used the same model as a base.

Trivia About the MQ-1
-My dad was assigned to a Predator squadron in the California Air National Guard. While i won't name this squadron, I'll give you a hint. This squadron is best known for aiding fire fighters in fighting out-of-control brush fires all over the Southwest, most notably the Camp Fire in Paradise California in 2018, using the Predator's thermal camera to spot hotspots underground before the have a chance to ignite anything above ground.
-The MQ-1 runs on 91 octane gasoline. while being on the more pricier side, it's not nearly as expensive as avgas making this plane one of the cheaper ones to operate.
-The center of gravity on the MQ-1 when empty of fuel is located directly above the main landing gear. This makes it possible for a human to pick it up and move it around easily.
-The pilot flys the plane via a camera pointing out the nose while the WSO uses the targeting pod. both typically use joy sticks to operate their assigned systems, however controls can be customized in many ways, including the use of game pads and even the mouse-yoke and keyboard method. and can be inverted if they prefer.
-all missions are flown stateside, with a handler at the FOB providing Take off and landing until the drone is at an altitude where it can receive signal from within the united states.
