Laffey’s Origin
The Laffey destroyer (USS Laffey) refers collectively to two U.S. Navy destroyers of World War II. The first‑generation ship belonged to the Benson class (DD‑459) and was laid down by the Bethlehem‑San Francisco Steel Company on 13 January 1941. The second‑generation vessel was an Allen M. Sumner‑class destroyer (DD‑724), construction of which began in June 1943.
The first‑generation Laffey took part in the Battle of Cape Esperance in October 1942 as the vanguard of the 64.2 Task Force. Its gunfire struck the bridge of the Japanese heavy cruiser Aoba, wounding the commander of the Japanese Sixth Squadron, Rear Admiral Gōtō Sonchi.
On 13 November 1942, during the third Solomon Sea battle, Laffey engaged the Japanese battleship Hiei in the Savo Strait. Laffey’s fire damaged Hiei’s bridge command system, wounding the fleet commander Admiral Abe Hiroki. In the ensuing combat Laffey was hit by Japanese main‑battery shells and torpedoes and sank; its commanding officer, Captain William Edwin Hank, was killed. For its gallantry the ship received a Presidential Unit Citation and three battle stars; the Japanese later described its fighting spirit as “a resolute will to die, flesh cut and bone broken.”(その凄绝な奋戦ぶりがまるで眼に见えるようで、私どもの感奋を促してやみません。
The Five‑Inch Courage!
On the night of 12 November, the U.S. task force broke into the Savo Strait from the west, intending to strike the Japanese fleet heading toward Henderson Field and to open the brutal “Guadalcanal Sea Battle (Third Solomon Sea battle, first night action).”
Following Scott’s advice, Callahan arranged a three‑column line‑ahead formation. Laffey, likely because of its outstanding performance, again led the vanguard, followed by Sterett and O’Bannon.
Before dawn on Friday, 13 November, the two sides became tangled in darkness and chaos, making friend‑or‑foe identification impossible. Many ships and crews were lost forever in the “Iron‑bottom Bay,” giving the battle the nickname “Black Friday.”
Early in the fight the Japanese concentrated fire on the cruiser Atlanta, destroying its bridge. The battle at Cape Esperance had already earned a great reputation for the U.S. forces; the first night‑action victory over the Japanese was the death of Scott, leaving only one senior officer alive. Because of severe damage, Atlanta was abandoned and scuttled at noon on the 13th.
During the melee, Admiral Abe Hiroki’s flagship, the battleship Hiei, met Cushing, Laffey, O’Bannon, and Sterett head‑on.
Cushing, already heavily damaged, sighted Hiei and launched six torpedoes; three struck Hiei’s hull but failed to explode. Shortly after, an undamaged Hiei closed in, illuminated Cushing with its searchlight and reduced the destroyer to a twisted wreck on the deck.
The spotlight also drew fire from the U.S. ships onto Hiei. Cushing, ablaze, was abandoned; about 60 crew members perished in the flames. Witnesses reported that Cushing drifted until it finally exploded and sank on the afternoon of the 13th.
Laffey, positioned behind Cushing, closed to within a few metres of Hiei. Captain Hank ordered a hard turn and launched torpedoes (which also failed to explode) while the two vessels continued to close. At that moment the distance between Hiei and Laffey was roughly 10 metres.
While Hiei’s 35.6 cm main battery fired a long‑range salvo, Laffey’s guns struck Hiei’s bridge, wounding many of the command staff led by Admiral Abe and killing Chief of Staff Suzuki. Laffey’s four 5‑inch single‑mount guns were hit by Hiei’s 15.2 cm secondary guns, destroying two of them. Laffey continued to fight with its remaining two 5‑inch guns, damaging Hiei’s port side, bow, and stern.
After achieving these results, the short‑lived destroyer was attacked by several Japanese destroyers and then by Hiei’s (or possibly Kirishima’s) main battery, sustaining fatal damage. Additionally, the cruiser Nagara (or possibly Kumano) launched an oxygen torpedo that severed Laffey’s stern.
With its generators destroyed (or its boilers directly hit), fire broke out throughout the ship; the hull was riddled with holes and began to break apart. The commander ordered the crew to abandon ship, but the surrounding sea was also unsafe. Depth charges on board detonated, tearing the hull apart like rain of burning fragments and killing many nearby survivors.

Presidential Unit Citation
The news was sent back to the United States, and the then U.S. President Roosevelt awarded the Presidential Unit Citation to the destroyer USS Laffey. The text reads as follows:
The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the PRESIDENTIAL UNIT CITATION to the
“For outstanding performance during action against enemy Japanese forces in the Southwest Pacific area, 15 September to 13 November 1942. Braving hostile fire to rescue survivors in submarine‑infested waters, the LAFFEY, after fighting effectively in the Battle of Cape Esperance, successfully repelled an aerial torpedo attack, and although badly crippled and set afire, inflicted severe damage on Japanese naval units off Savo Island. Eventually succumbing to her wounds after the enemy had fled in defeat, she left behind an illustrious example of heroic fighting spirit.”
