South African Airways 295 is a scheduled international passenger flight from Chiang Kai-shek International Airport, Taipei, Taiwan, to Jan Smuts International Airport, Johannesburg, South Africa, with a stopover at Plaisance Airport, Plaine Magnien, Mauritius. On November 28, 1987, the aircraft serving the flight, a Boeing 747-200 Combi, experienced a catastrophic on-flight fire in the cargo area, breaking in mid-air and crashing into the Indian Ocean in Eastern Mauritius, killing all 159 people on board. An extensive salvage operation was carried out to try to recover the plane's flight recording equipment, one of which was salvaged from a depth of 4,900 meters (16,100 ft).
The official investigation, led by Judge Cecil Margo, could not determine the cause of the fire. This lack of conclusion has led to conspiracy theories, debates and speculations about the nature of the cargo on Flight 295 as advanced cargo, as well as a subsequent post-racist investigation and calls by relatives of those on board the flight to reopen the investigation in the years following the accident.
