The A-4Q Skyhawk, originally the Douglas A-4B, was acquired by the Argentine Navy (Armada Argentina) in the early 1970s to replace the aging F9F Panther fleet aboard the aircraft carrier ARA Veinticinco de Mayo. Modified to suit naval operations, the A-4Q retained the Skyhawk’s renowned agility and compact design, making it ideal for carrier-based strike missions.
Fitted with arrestor gear and naval avionics, the A-4Q operated primarily in the attack and fleet defense roles. During the 1982 Falklands/Malvinas War, A-4Q pilots flew from land bases due to the limited use of Veinticinco de Mayo, but still played a significant role in anti-ship and ground-attack sorties.
Powered by the Wright J65-W-20 turbojet engine, the A-4Q could reach speeds up to 670 mph (1,078 km/h) and deliver up to 8,200 lbs (3,720 kg) of ordnance across five hardpoints. It carried a wide range of weapons including Mk 82 bombs, Zuni rockets, and napalm canisters, suitable for interdiction and maritime strike missions.
While it lacked modern radar and guided munitions, the A-4Q’s effectiveness relied on low-level penetration tactics and the exceptional skill of its naval aviators, many of whom executed bold, close-range attacks against British surface vessels during the conflict.
Key Features of the A-4Q Skyhawk:
Carrier-capable variant of the A-4B with tailhook and reinforced landing gear.
Designed for naval strike and close air support missions.
Could operate from ARA Veinticinco de Mayo (prior to the 1982 conflict).
Used unguided bombs, rockets, and cannons in low-altitude attack profiles.
Played a crucial role during the Falklands War, operating from mainland bases.
Limited avionics, but rugged and reliable in combat.
