Lavochkin La-5 (FN variant)
- About the aircraft
The Lavochkin La-5FN was a pivotal Soviet fighter aircraft that played a crucial role in turning the tide of the Eastern Front during World War II. It was a direct evolution of the earlier LaGG-3, correcting its shortcomings by replacing its original, underpowered inline engine with the significantly more powerful Shvetsov ASh-82 radial engine. This transformation dramatically improved the aircraft's performance, particularly its rate of climb and top speed, finally giving Soviet pilots a competitive edge against the Luftwaffe's formidable fighters.
The La-5FN was the ultimate expression of the La-5 family. The "FN" designation stood for "Forsirovanny Neposredstvennovo Vpriska," meaning "uprated with direct injection." This further enhancement to the ASh-82 engine resulted in increased horsepower, especially at lower altitudes, making it a deadly dogfighter. The aircraft featured improved aerodynamics, lighter construction (through the use of metal spars in the wings in later production runs), and better pilot visibility compared to its predecessors.
The definitive La-5FN had a fuel-injected engine, a different engine air intake, and was further lightened. A full circle turn took 18–19 seconds. Very late-production La-5FN had two 20mm Berezin B-20 cannon installed in the cowling in place of the heavier two 20mm ShVAK; both were capable of a salvo weight of 3.4 kg/s.
The La-5FN was a favorite among Soviet pilots for its ruggedness, reliability, and potent firepower. It was instrumental in achieving air superiority over the Eastern Front, contributing significantly to the eventual Soviet victory. Here is some possible nicknames to the La-5FN:
Laggbuster: A play on the LaGG-3's perceived shortcomings, implying the La-5 series "busted" the reputation of its predecessor.
Flying Tank: Emphasizing its rugged construction and ability to absorb damage.
Wart Remover: A humorous nickname alluding to its success in clearing the skies of German aircraft during the war.
The Stinger: Given its potent cannons and ability to deliver a quick, decisive blow.
Eastern Hornet: Relating to the frontal view with the big radial engine.
Front Fighter: Emphasizing its essential function as a frontline fighter.
