Su-33 Flanker D

"It's just a flanker with canards, it will be easy" last words before pain train.

I had initially planned on fewer parts, but the Su-33 has quite a bit more components than the 27 so yeah a lot of things got added most parts were simply from designing the wing fold as I needed to separate the slats and flaps into 2 sections, and ofcourse since the flaps for the 33 are different from the 27 more parts came in for each section.

Functions

Activate1: FCS override (yeah It can cobra)
Activate2: Canopy
Activate3: Wing fold (only works when grounded)
Activate4: TailHook

Flaps are automatic whether takeoff, landing or high AoA they'll do what they need to do when it needs to be done.

It doesn't have a catapult hook as Russian navy doesn't use catapults for carrier launches they use ramps, it does however have powerful engines and huge wing area so carrier takeoffs are fine.

Flight performance (IMPORTANT)

  1. When FCS is active it flys much like the Su-27s albeit with a bit more AoA at low speed and higher drag, so it can pull more AoA but loses more speed at the same AoA, oh yeah it's also about 2tons heavier so it likes following it's momentum.

  2. IT CAN COBRA, yeah I got it to cobra, but there are issues to explain here:

a, Make sure you arent in afterburner, the engines tend to cause a pitch up motion at high AoA, so in afterburner the jet will continue to pitch up well past 100° of AoA causing it to flip uncontrollably for a while, if you've already entered the flip just reduce throttle and hold Roll till it enters a flat spin.

b, I made a auto recovery FT for flat spins so no inputs are needed, most importantly DO NOT ENABLE THE FCS DURING ANY POST STALL MANEUVERS. The FCS as per usual doesn't like situations that are outside it's accurate control and will store up errors.

Alright thats it from me, enjoy it's quite the fun jet to fly.

@Dy4me that may have a large impact on its performance, I wonder how much difference it could make.

@Dy4me didn’t know the game had that, I wonder if it’s a unity thing or an sp thing, interesting. well I’m looking forward to both of their releases!

@F8boa OH yeah and I forgot to mention, I probably should put it on the description often, SP physics setting also affects when oscillations start I make my builds in High physics settings that might be the issue.

@F8boa Suggestions are reviews are pretty helpful since builder bias is a thing i might just be having a placebo effect on my own improvements, so when someone reviews it helps get an external perspective on builds.

As for the F-16, SP has an issue with PIDs in general like plugging in a PID value higher than 0 will guarantee oscillation at certain speeds since control inputs become more sensitive at higher speeds. You actually have to reduce the PID value by quite a lot to reduce the oscillations which in my case it goes down to 0.2 times past 800km/h.

Though I did make improvements on the 16C already, im just looking for a time to release it, ill probably release a v1.2 after the Su-30sm.

@Dy4me oh for sure, I bet sp2 will have a number of improvements to it for sure. I will say though, the f-16c’s fcs model I think would also be 10x better without the oscillation but then again, SimplePlanes is pretty limited in that regard as well. Sorry if these suggestions are silly as I’m not the one actually building them. They’re great regardless and I think are some of the best on the site as of now.

@F8boa Thanks for the suggestion, ill try see what I can do, it's primarily because of SP's wing physics really, options are too limited and unrealistic. I'll keep working on the FMs and drag models, and release newer versions as I learn.

@Dy4me I see, thanks so much. Absolutely underrated flight models btw, I think one suggestion for all of your flight models is that they should lose speed faster when above 900kmh

@F8boa there's a start up procedure, in the cockpit on the bottom right panel just toggle all the switches on.

The engines don’t start unless it’s spawned in the air, why is that?
