B-17 Flying Fortress

101k Blyatnov  2.2 years ago

The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress is a four-engined heavy bomber developed in the 1930s for the United States Army Air Corps (USAAC). Competing against Douglas and Martin for a contract to build 200 bombers, the Boeing entry (prototype Model 299/XB-17) outperformed both competitors and exceeded the Air Corps' performance specifications. Although Boeing lost the contract (to the Douglas B-18 Bolo) because the prototype crashed, the Air Corps ordered 13 more B-17s for further evaluation. From its introduction in 1938, the B-17 Flying Fortress evolved through numerous design advances, becoming the third-most produced bomber of all time, behind the four-engined Consolidated B-24 Liberator and the multirole, twin-engined Junkers Ju 88.

    @RC1138Boss that's the funny part, the Norden bomb sight was kinda trash, I know, I know, it's heresy to utter such words, but it's true.

    @JustLookingForFriends very good knowledge.

    Although i respect your point but in the European theatre the b 17 out classed all previous variants. Correct me if im wrong but a life saving aspect, the chin gun wwas mounted on the G.

    I would love if you ddi a forum on b1 7 history since you know so much.

    I have to agree with you that the F the bomber program was advanced but to get the results of the war you needed the Norden which was in the G. Tit for Tat really, chicken or egg.

    @JustLookingForFriends i mean if you have been having a convo about it and you say "the 17 is..." id say its ok. just like you can call the 737 the 73 or 747 74 or a cessna 172 a 72 etc.

    @RC1138Boss Yea, sure, maybe, but the best variant is rarely the genesis that started it. The 17G may be common, but that doesn't matter when its the last of a line of large 4 engined aircraft. It is whilst not a footnote, yet still not the most important B-17 variant. The 17E served through just about the entire war, and performed high importance mapping missions, as well as obliterate Japanese aircraft at Lae, Finschafen, Rabaul and Balikpapan. To add to all of that, the B-17E joined the RAF as an anti submarine patrol plane. The B-17F crawled for the B-17E to walk for the B-29 to become Usain Bolt. Without the B-17F, we'd have still been fumbling about with the B-29. And the G variants used the success of the E and F to obliterate German production capabilities. My point, reached through my statements above, is that the B-17G was just as, if not less, important than the B-17E and F. Hence, the E or F variant should be considered the B-17, not the G.

    Well, firstly, one of the things I have noticed on the Avro Lancaster is the interior color, pure, plain and clean white. In reality the Avro Lancaster's interior color was a light green-ish color. I know the reason behind this is to increase visibility on the inside but might as well dirty the color a bit, right? I mean like, it's not like the Lancaster is this luxurious plane or something, eh? @RC1138Boss
