VIA Rail's P42DC units are similar to those of Amtrak, but they were customized by GE to cater to VIA Rail's specifications. The modifications include a reconfigured HEP system compatible with both the Canadian-standard two-sided bus and the Amtrak-standard single bus, along with software that monitors and controls the LRC cars' onboard systems through a 27-pin communication cable. Unlike Amtrak's units, VIA's lack ATS and cab signaling, as these features are not present on Canadian railways. The majority of the units were delivered sporting the "Renaissance" livery, with 2 featuring a blue base and accents in Renaissance Green. The majority of units come fitted with the Nathan AirChime K5LA 5-chime horn, accompanied by a secondary Nathan K5CA-LS "emergency" horn positioned at the locomotive's front. This configuration is a requirement for all Canadian passenger trains following Transport Canada's prohibition of the standalone K5LA horn, although a combination of K5LA and K5CA is permissible. In 2015, certain locomotives were upgraded by replacing their standard K5LA horns with 'Hybrid' K5LA horns, distinguished by a variant #3 bell. Moreover, the majority of these units are equipped with the Graham-White electronic bell.In 2021, VIA received their first SCV-42 trainset, intended to replace the P42s. However, as of July 2025, all P42s remain in service, and VIA has now taken delivery of their 30th Charger trainset. Once the 31st and final trainset arrives, VIA plans to retire the P42s and place them in storage.
