Vietnam Airlines Flight 831, a Tupolev Tu-134, crashed in a rice field near Semafahkarm Village, Tambon Khu Khot, Lam Luk Ka District, Pathum Thani, Thailand while on a flight from Hanoi to Bangkok in 1988. The cause of the accident has not yet been determined, but the pilots said the plane may have been struck by lightning.
The plane entered the storm zone and was struck by lightning, causing the plane to be completely destroyed, broken into three segments. The plane exploded after falling into a field 6 km from Bangkok International Airport.
76 people died, including Minister of Health Dang Hoi Xuan. There were 14 lucky survivors in this case including 1 pilot, 1 flight attendant and 1 passenger (Cao Tran Quyet Thang - an officer of the State Science and Technology Commission). This accident was the second fatal accident at that time in Thailand and the first fatal accident of Vietnam Airlines.
