TA-4K Skyhawk (Draken) Overview
The TA-4K Skyhawk, operated by Draken International, is a two-seat trainer and light attack aircraft derived from the Royal New Zealand Air Force's upgraded A-4K Kahu variant. Originally modernized under the Kahu program in the 1980s, these aircraft were preserved and later acquired by Draken for adversary air training, continuing their legacy in modern air combat support roles.

Like the single-seat A-4K, the TA-4K is powered by the Pratt & Whitney J52-P-8A turbojet engine, enabling a top speed of approximately 675 mph (1,086 km/h). It retains a full suite of advanced avionics and mission systems that were installed during the Kahu upgrade, placing it on par with many fourth-generation fighter capabilities of its era.

The TA-4K is equipped with:

AN/APG-66NZ radar (based on the F-16's system) for superior situational awareness and targeting.

MIL-STD-1553 digital databus, glass cockpit with HUD and MFDs.

Modern weapons compatibility, including AGM-65F Maverick, AIM-9L Sidewinder, and laser-guided bombs.

Enhanced mission computers, electronic warfare (EW) systems, and navigation equipment.

Full dual controls, allowing pilot and instructor operations, suitable for advanced training or multi-role missions.

Capable of carrying up to 9,900 lbs (4,490 kg) of external ordnance over five hardpoints, the TA-4K is not only a capable trainer but also an effective platform for light attack and aggressor roles. Draken International uses these aircraft for Red Air support, tactical training, and simulated combat missions for U.S. and allied military forces.

Though originally retired from the RNZAF in 2001, the TA-4K continues to prove its value in the private sector, a testament to the enduring effectiveness of the Kahu modernization.
