MiG-23 “Flogger”

The MiG-23, first flown in 1967, was the Soviet Union’s first variable-sweep wing fighter, built to replace the MiG-21 and match Western jets like the F-4 Phantom II.

It could change its wing angle for speed or maneuverability, hit Mach 2.3, and carry radar-guided missiles for beyond-visual-range combat.

Used by over 30 countries, it saw action in the Middle East, Africa, and the Gulf War. Though not perfect in dogfights, it was a huge leap in Soviet fighter tech and paved the way for jets like the MiG-29 and Su-27.
