The 737-800, or 73H, is the most commonly produced variant of the 737NG by far and replaced the 737-400 from the 737 Classic series. Launched on September 5, 1994, its launch customer, Hapag-Lloyd Flug (later TUI fly Deutschland), received the first one in April 1998. The aircraft competes with the Airbus A320 and also filled the niche of the discontinued McDonnell Douglas MD-80/-90 series and Boeing's own aging 727s. Today, Ryanair is the largest operator of the type, with over 400 in their fleet. Variants of the 737-800 include the -800A (P-8 Poseidon), -800 BBJ2, -800BCF, and the -800SF.
