FWM 199

A Focke Wulf / Messerschmitt joint venture aircraft production development during later months of 1944
Designed as a high altitude single seat fighter/ bomber interceptor for the Luftwaffe, driven by a powerful supercharged Daimiler-benz V-12 liquid cooled engine with contra-rotating propellers to reduce torque and improve efficiency of the monster engine.
Only a handful of the FWM 199 were produced before a disagreement between Focke Wulf and Messerschmitt caused the project to be abandoned.
The FWM 199 proved to be a very effective high altitude fighter flying higher and faster than allied fighters in the same class, although being superior in many ways it did have it’s flaws, the insane full consumption of the Daimler Benz supercharged V-12 engine made the effective range very limited without external fuel tanks, also if the aircraft wasn’t properly weight and balanced before flight it could enter an uncontrollable flat spin at speeds nearing a stall forcing the pilot to abandon the aircraft, pilots also complained about the poor ground handling capabilities

FWM 199-K4 trop

The K4 trop variant was developed to focus on handling issues and the need for a dedicated fighter/ ground attack aircraft in Northern Africa. It was made more streamlined by modifying the shape of the canopy while maintaining visibility and a lengthened cowling to accomodate a tropical cooling pack and larger super chargers that are quite noticeable in front of the cockpit, the drawback the the increased aerodynamic performance was the fact that it was difficult to slow the aircraft down during dive bombing operations so an additional set of airbrakes were fitted on the wings.
Fuel issues were also addressed with extra fuel tanks added into the wings and more firepower was added with an additional set of MG 131 13mm machine guns set into the wings.
