F-20 Tigershark

The Northrop F-20 Tigershark was born in the late Cold War era as an advanced evolution of the F-5 Tiger II. Designed in the early 1980s, the F-20 was meant to be a lightweight, affordable, and deadly multirole fighter for U.S. allies who couldn’t buy high-end jets like the F-15 or F-16.

It packed a single General Electric F404 engine, giving it almost double the thrust of the F-5 and allowing speeds over Mach 2. It carried modern avionics, radar systems, and could launch the latest guided missiles — all while being easy to maintain and far cheaper than its bigger brothers.

The F-20 was also known for its incredible acceleration and ability to go from a cold start to combat-ready in just minutes, making it ideal for rapid defense. Many test pilots praised it as one of the best fighters they ever flew.

But despite its strengths, the F-20 never entered full production. Politics, heavy competition from the F-16, and lack of buyers killed the program. By the mid-1980s, only prototypes had been built, and the Tigershark became a legend of “what could have been.”
