Meet the newly finished Ye-152-1 record-breaking heavy interceptor

4 long months of frustration, joy, and hard work have been engraved into this magnificent aircraft in order to make this moment possible. The two hardest things for me about this aircraft was fixing the main landing gear retraction process, and engraving the “152-1” numbers on the sides of the nose intake.

Features

  • Tumansky R-15B-300 turbojet engine
  • Custom landing gear
  • Two Raduga K-9 (NATO: AA-4 “Awl”) missiles
  • Braking chute (AG-1)
  • Drop tank (AG-2)
  • Airbrakes
  • Flaps (These weirdly perform the best when deployed up)
  • Historical slight nose droop

Controls

  • For takeoff, pitch back hard and then slam throttle to 100% for the safest take off without loss of yaw control.
  • For landing, fly in low and release the braking chute just above the runway. Be gentle on the brakes as the long landing gear is a little top-heavy.

History

This was intended to be the definitive heavy interceptor, combining the Tumansky R-15B-300 engine (uprated to 22,509 lb thrust, 10,210 kg) with a slightly modified airframe and the same weapons of the Ye-152A. Two prototypes were built, the Ye-152-1 and the Ye-152-2. Apart from having a large single engine, the obvious new feature was that the Ye-152-1 carried its Raduga K-9 missiles on down-sloping launch rails on the wingtips. Internal fuel was slightly increased, and avionics were augmented. From its first flight on April 21, 1961, it was plagued by engine problems. But on July 7, 1961, Test Pilot Colonel Georgy Konstantinovich Mosolov set a straight line record at 1,666 mph (2,681 km/h, Mach 2.52), a sustained-height record at 74,377 ft (22,670 m) on October 10, 1961, and a 100 km closed circuit record at an average speed of 1,492 mph (2,401 km/h, Mach 2.26) on September 11, 1962. These records were submitted to the FAI as having been set by an aircraft know as “Ye-166” for secrecy reasons.

Oh yeah. I put on fixed tailplanes for testing, but forgot to put them on pivots. Oh well, thanks for pointing that out! @BogdanX

No problem, great work, love the detail. Red stars are nicely done! I saw iOS and I can fully sympathise with trying to get lettering to line up properly, if only you could input a figure as opposed to trying to move a slider to get the right xyz rotation it would save a world of hurt. I don’t think the world of android/Mac/pc realise how much of a pain in the hoop this is! @AircraftoftheRedStar

It was one of the prototypes in the development of the MiG-21. In fact, this aircraft was much larger than the MiG-21! @DankDorito
