Morozov Mor-5K — High-Altitude Interceptor Fighter
Developed in the later years of the war by the Morozov Design Bureau, the Mor-5K represented a decisive shift in Kalishan fighter doctrine toward high-speed interception and energy-based combat. Conceived as a counter to increasingly fast and heavily armed enemy aircraft, the Mor-5K prioritized climb performance, dive stability, and structural rigidity over sustained turning ability.
The most distinctive feature of the Mor-5K was its clipped wing configuration. By shortening the span and reducing induced drag, the design achieved exceptional roll response and high-speed control, making it particularly effective in boom-and-zoom engagements and vertical maneuvering. While this reduced low-speed lift and increased landing speeds, the trade-off was considered acceptable for an interceptor intended to operate primarily above medium altitude.
Power was provided by the Derz-28B, an eight-cylinder, turbocharged inline engine delivering 1,750 horsepower. This installation granted the Mor-5K a maximum speed of approximately 730 kilometers per hour and a service ceiling of 10,050 meters, placing it among the fastest piston-engined fighters of its generation. The turbocharger allowed the aircraft to retain power well into the upper altitude bands, enabling interception of high-flying reconnaissance and bomber formations.
Armament reflected a balance between weight discipline and lethality. Four 13.7 mm heavy machine guns were installed—two synchronized in the nose and two mounted in the wings—providing a dense, concentrated fire pattern optimized for short, high-deflection firing passes. While lighter than cannon-armed contemporaries, the system offered high reliability and sustained fire capability, particularly effective against lightly armored fighters and medium bombers.
In service, the Mor-5K earned a reputation as a fast, unforgiving aircraft. It demanded disciplined energy management and precise handling, rewarding skilled pilots with superior interception performance and unmatched high-speed agility. Though fragile in prolonged turning engagements and less tolerant of pilot error, the Mor-5K stood as one of Morozov’s most refined interceptor designs—a machine built not for endurance, but for decisive, high-altitude dominance.
