J-8II Improvement Program – Modernizing the Chinese Interceptor The J-8II Improvement Program is a comprehensive modernization effort aimed at transforming the venerable interceptor into a multirole platform capable of meeting contemporary combat demands. This rebuild introduces extensive changes across the airframe, avionics, and armament systems—resulting in a markedly more capable and versatile aircraft. The airframe has been completely reworked, replacing the original delta wing with a new double-delta configuration and fixed leading-edge strakes reminiscent of the J-8 ACT demonstrator. Dual ventral fins have replaced the older single folding fin, enhancing transonic and supersonic stability. In the cockpit, a full glass suite now dominates the pilot’s interface, with a large central MFD and a wide-angle HUD providing critical flight and combat data. The canopy bracing has been removed to improve forward visibility—modernizing both ergonomics and combat effectiveness. Electronics and weapon systems have also seen significant upgrades. A newly integrated radar warning receiver sits atop the vertical stabilizer, while the jet now boasts the ability to carry up to 12 missiles—including 10 ARH and 2 IR missiles, a major leap from the original 6. The internal cannon has also been upgraded from the GSh-23 twin-barrel to the more powerful GSh-30, providing greater punch in close-range engagements. Additionally, the aircraft is equipped for anti-ship operations and close air support missions, ensuring the J-8II is no longer limited to its interceptor roots. This project reimagines the J-8II as a true 4th-generation multirole combat aircraftv
