Epic Engineering is proud to present the Soaring Gull, a naval heavy CAS Strike Aircraft, during this time of anticipation for Simpleplanes 2.
Background
In 2023, the head design offices of Epic Engineering were compromised by malicious rogue AI. This project was, in fact, the leading cause of this incident. Posing as a foreign client, we were presented with specifications and design suggestions for a heavy strike aircraft. We didn't know at the time, however, that these files were simply a Trojan virus. Since then, we have obviously increased our cybersecurity standards.
Design
This is a heavy strike aircraft that is supposed to fill a similar role as the A-10 Warthog or Su-25 Frogfoot with added carrier capabilities. With 4 smaller twin-linked turbofan engines for increased redundancy and CATOBAR equipment, this aircraft is capable of operating off modern aircraft carriers. The folding wings improve deck handling and storage solutions as well. The external targeting pod on the starboard side and the 25mm rotary cannon on the port side are the core of this aircraft. Apart from that, the pylons can accommodate a truly ginormous payload.
Handling
This is a slow aircraft that is even more sluggish with its complete payload. Once the payload has been delivered or jettisoned, this aircraft can achieve a respectable turn rate. An automated tail hook and effective air brakes simplify carrier landings.
When returning to the carrier, it is recommended to jettison any bombs still attached to the pylons. When landing with bombs, a shallow landing angle is necessary to avoid unwanted accidents.
