Designed in 2004 by Argus Arms Engineering, the MZ-19 Cougar series features a modified Rheinmettal L55 120mm main armament, capable of firing standard NATO rounds. The tank is manufactured in Lycernia, and the E variant of the Cougar 1 is meant for export. The primary buyers are Sweden, UAE, and Qatar. The MZ-19 is equipped with a block-style system of reactive armor, and is capable of repelling most modern ATGMs. The frontal armor on the hull (excluding BSA) is 408mm, 220mm at the sides (without side skirts), and 120mm at the rear. The turret armor (without BSA) is 445mm, 200mm on the sides, and 150mm at the rear. The gun is a manual loader, giving the tank a crew of four. In the event that the crew needs to escape the tank as quickly as possible, all the hatches (driver's hatch, loader's hatch, and commander's hatch) can be ejected from the vehicle. There are also sensors outside of the tank that detect incoming rounds. Their purpose is to close off the ammunition storage unit, to help prevent an explosion from injuring, or killing, the crew. So far, six countries use the MZ-19E, with over 1,500 having been produced. The vehicle pictured here is in Swedish service.
