Simpleplanes has certainly come on a long way since then.

The English Electric Lightning was a British built interceptor introduced into RAF service in 1960, and retired in 1988.
The Lightning was, and remains the only British designed and built fighter aircraft capable of reaching Mach 2. It was designed to defend the V bomber airfields from soviet nuclear bombers.
Controls:
AG1: Engine 1
AG2: Engine 2
AG3: Arm Missiles
AG4: Canopy
AG5: Jettison Weapons
AG6: Brake Parachute
AG7: Eject (make sure the canopy is closed)
AG8: Lights (automatically on)
VTOL: Air brakes
