Aeroflot Flight 1492 took off from Sheremetyevo International Airport for Murmansk Airport at 18:02 local time (15:02 UTC). Initial reports have mentioned a lightning strike in-flight. During the flight the transponder code was changed to 7600 (radio failure) at 15:11 UTC and subsequently 7700 (emergency) at 15:25 UTC.

It stopped climbing at flight level 090 (9,000 ft, 2,700 m) and turned back, carrying out an emergency landing around 27 minutes after take-off, where it bounced, then veered off of the runway. All but the forward fuselage burned out. Reports from surviving passengers suggest that a lightning strike may have occurred shortly after takeoff, and crew members said lightning appeared to be responsible for a loss of communication with air traffic control. Owing to this loss of communication, the crew decided that it was too dangerous to dump fuel over Moscow before the emergency landing.

Russia's Investigative Committee announced that out of the five crew and 73 passengers, 37 people had survived the disaster, and that the other 41 on board, including one crew member, had died.

During the evacuation, passengers were seen carrying hand luggage off the aircraft after sliding down the inflatable slides.

The accident aircraft was a Russian-manufactured Sukhoi Superjet 100 with the registration RA-89098 and MSN (manufacturer's serial number) 95135, which first flew in 2017.

@ChiyomiAnzai I know, but as much as I want Putin to be executed for crimes against humanity. This time, alas, was nature.

@ChiyomiAnzai Very unlikely. The pilots and passengers both reported lightning striking the plane. Unless 37 strangers happened to be alligned in some way, but that is again very unlikely.
