This heavily armed, long-endurance ground-attack variant of the C-130 Hercules transport aircraft, is the second main attack aircraft of the US Air Force (USAF). The airframe is manufactured by Lockheed Martin, while Boeing is responsible for the conversion into a gunship and for aircraft support. This variant, the AC-130U, is an upgraded version of the older AC-130H.
Operational history
AC-130Us were first used in the Vietnam War and the Cold War. It would later be used in the Gulf War and the War on Terror.
