A few hours ago I created my first mod: Skinland.
It is an extremely simple map demonstrating ability to create a map mod, but nothing further.
The real goal, hopefully, is to address the shortage of 2m-gauge railways in SimplePlanes.
Now, obviously railways are far, far more complicated. There needs to be a consistent, flat gauge with predictable colliders and, to get any further use, switches between lines which the player can interact with. This is quite advanced compared to a simple terrain mesh, so I’m curious how one would go about learning. How did people create the existing SP rail mods, both in the mod itself and learning the skills to do so?
Note: I have no experience with Unity or proper 3D modeling programs beyond Skinland. I am a complete beginner.
Any help would be appreciated.
@32 I did not try using them since it was not relevant to what I was doing.
@Graingy yeah that's what I meant, a child of the terrain. Is adding prefabs like vehicles or bridges working? I'm trying to recall how I got that to work last time I made a mod map. I might be able to look at my project files and see what I did at the time.
@32 What do you mean attach? I first tried it with the spline as a child (right term?) of the terrain rather than directly of the map, but that didn’t work so I moved it.
@Graingy try attaching them to the terrain object
@Boeing727200F The tracks themselves are not the problem. Two bars will suffice.
The problem is laying it out. I tried a tool, but that tool didn't work. It flat-out seemed to be broken.
I tried another way. The tracks didn't appear in-game.
That is the problem.
@Graingy try finding some tracks for free on some sort of site for unity. Then modify them to be able to use 2 meter gauge
And that's not even touching switches and other functional components!
Unfortunately the person who made SPR hasn't been active in years.
@Boeing727200F
1: Those test tracks use SP1 fuselage geometries, which are stupidly inefficient for a rectangle.
2: That doesn't solve the problem of fitting them all together smoothly.
The second issue is the big one. How?
only problem with converting a standard gauge engine to a 2 meter gauge engine, i dont know what engine i got looks good to get the finalized conversion
also a random fun fact "my" ALCo S4M and yariss's SD40-2 can both use 2 meter gauge bogies unmodified. im just going to refer them for standard gauge trains as "big foot bogies" as it honestly they kinda fit the name if going off of standard gauge rolling stock
@Graingy make some?
i mean you do have the test track parts you could export or you can attempt to make a rail in something
@Boeing727200F Oh yeah sure IF I FUCKING GET SOME RAAHHHYEUEUFHEIRJIGNEIGJRIFHEUFHUEBRURUDUDFU
Seriously losing my shit.
i will 100% jerry rig a standard gauge train onto your 2 meter wide tracks.
@32 I used a more basic official spline tool. It didn't fit as well but it actually did something.
Made a map. Made the track. Fitted the map to the track (which took a very, very long time).
Guess what?
None of the track pieces existed in game.
And yes, it was set to be under the SP map object.
I think I'm starting to develop trust issues over this.
@32 The only thing I needed out of blender was two rectangles.
I'm not even joking.
@Graingy Unity tutorials are the worst because every update is drastically different smh.
Blender is cool though
@32 I have spent so many hours trying to follow that damn tutorial.
I downloaded blender for goodness sake.
The amazing part?
The tutorial uses a button which does not exist in the actual program.
I fucking hate online tutorials.
@Boeing727200F At this point I don't even know what I'm doing.
All I need is a 2m track.
@Graingy ATLX (the blue patch job people) fucked up repainting the train so bad you decided to learn how to use unity and blender to prove them wrong.
I have two fucking programs open.
Unity and Blender.
Your fault!
@Boeing727200F Oh right.
This is your fault.
find it funny how all of this started thanks to a company acquiring 3 engines lmao
@PlaneFlightX I unintentionally spoiled the minecraft end poem music for myself while building a giant land cruiser thingy.
Oof.
@Graingy I just wear a gaming headset. And am currently listening to peaceful Minecraft music.
@PlaneFlightX Have you considered buying a wizard hat and beard to wear while working on that?
Or have you already bought one?
