[WEBSITE] Prefixes on Forum Posts & Why You Should Try Them

577 SimpleStudent  yesterday

I've noticed a nice pattern in people using brackets (Not parentheses,) {Nor braces,} to title their post with a sort of category. However, not all forum posters do so. It isn't 'annoying' or 'a problem', but it's an efficient practice best shown easily to others. I would like to ask @SupremeDorian if this post is reasonable to be linked to Useful Links. I want to write a better introduction for this however, because I know that it's messy... Glup...

Opinionated Statement

You are more likely to get the information you want from others if you include a bracket prefix in the title of your post. Upvotes are next to the title, and if the title has an easy to read or recognizable 'prefix'.

Writing Game Suggestions for SimplePlanes

UserVoice

UserVoice found underneath the STUFF tab will ask you to log into an email to create an account, then you can post your suggestion. I see this as a sort of formal mailbox, as it's uncommon for people to scroll on UserVoice unless they have something they want in game. It also contains many posts that are short & lack detail, which are overlooked.

Workshopping Suggestions through Forums

By writing with detail on UserVoice, you give a more defined request that is likely easier to carry out by developers if wished. By posting in the SimplePlanes forums, you will see more people, but also more perspectives. Workshopping & balancing ideas by talking about them can settle inconsistencies & raise awareness to your suggestion, potentially getting a lot more people on board.

Suggested Title Categorizations

My Reasoning

This list doesn't deprecate tags (Announcement, Suggestion, Feelings etc.), as it is still overall useful to use them when sorting, but if specifying suggestions for the website, for SimplePlanes 2, or a bug fix in SimplePlanes, these work just a bit better without having to create a new tag, and too many tags will just make everything messy again.

Examples

  • [WEBSITE] for talking about the website; potential bugs, possible fixes, loves/hates with the UI, changes wanted

  • [SP2] for posts requiring help/discussion with features exclusive to SimplePlanes 2, or for simple titled bug posts that exist solely in SP2.

  • [SP1] for discussions oriented around SP1 that you may want more focus on. I feel this category is going to be obsolete for now, but after SimplePlanes 2's full release, it will be useful to get help with older code from veteran community members.

  • [WIP] for work-in-progress builds that aren't necessarily an anticipating teaser, but more like sharing what you've done so far.

  • [XML] or [FUNKY TREES] if you need help specifically around Funky Trees coding. Don't forget to check SimpleCheats II as well as snowflake0s' Funky Trees syntax guide found under the pinned links!

  • [SUGGESTION] to propose a feature that should be added- and to try and raise discussion around it. (I talked a lot about this at the start)

  • [HELP WANTED] if you are seriously struggling with something & you wish to seek help with something in a build that you may struggle to describe.

Don't feel like you NEED to use these!

Plenty of forum posts have simple titles for simple planes, or off topic discussion, or such. you don't need to use these at all, they just make it a bit easier to see. You can also make your own, i.e., for roleplay, or rewording the examples i gave :)

What this site actually needs is an overhaul of the tag system. The ability to select/exclude multiple for showing would be far more useful than the currently useless system exists. So, blacklists and whitelists saved to account.

@TheLoadingGorilla By the way, nice to meet you! I've interacted with you a couple times & decided to read through your bio. Important notes read & respected :). I have another friend who is an English nerd per se, so it's normal for me to be corrected wkwkwkwk. Student simplified 👍
