This is me personally.
If I see a design I like, I download it. If it also flies well, I upvote it.
If it needs some work I leave a comment and upvote it. If it flies like crap, I leave a comment and don't upvote. But that's rare.

@Skua but is requiring an account for downloading a good idea? If it is, then the devs could change the downloads stat to "people who have downloaded"

@jsaret to expand on your post, alt account abuse could maybe be reduced by only giving points per unique account that downloads the plane. That way, people would have to register a new account every time to hike their score up

Tbh I think a download should count as 1 or 2 points.

I dunno if there's any kind of observable pattern there, other than that it gets steadily worse as you get more popular. My pre-gold ones average at 12.625 downloads per vote, my post-gold ones average 56.333

Yeah, IMO it's pretty bad. Remember, though, many people that like your creation will download it several times because they forgot to save it, etc.
My best thing has like 320ish downloads and 11 upvotes, which is still depressing.
Don't expect 1:1 though. 10:1 is more realistic as an upper limit, unless it's a challenge, or some non-classic-vehicle, those are all over the map.
