So first off I'm still around just haven't been doing anything unorthodox with simpleplanes... yet and probably won't for a bit due to what I'm leading onto with this next bit.
You CAN in theory play simpleplanes on Linux.
So for context I was strumming through the forums and came across a post by Green/Alice they found that certain distros can and will in some way shape or form run simpleplanes with a wonderful thing that steam uses called Proton.
Now what is Proton you may ask?
Proton is a compatibility layer which came shortly after the failure of the Original steam machines and original steam OS (not going to give the whole story about this but I do recommend watching Bringus Studios video on the prototype steam machine that he got ahold of).
But basically Proton allows for games usually playable on windows based machines to work on Linux (or well any of the many different flavors of Linux)
Now where am I going with this, I found a particular distro called Zorin OS that was able to launch Simpleplanes from steam with no real issues and was able to open the plane builder with no issues, now I still have to conduct further testing but for what I was able to see the results are promising for the most part. Now for those who may want to use Linux I do recommend Zorin due to it being fairly easy to use and has a similar layout to what you find with windows, not to mention has support for Nvidia, AMD and Intel gpu drivers, and support for game stores and so forth. But I do advise doing your research first and reading up on how to set a distro up since not all distros are created equally and aren't always stable... Like arch.
So for the most part I'll have to make a update post later on when I do get to further testing with Zorin OS, and I do have high hopes that those who do want to switch will get the ability to play SP on Linux finally.
Also was a surprise that it worked with no problems on my trusty Thinkpad.
@32 fair enough but the original forum mentioned how on some distros it didn't work
Works fine on Steam deck with a mouse and keyboard. SP2 as well. It literally works with Proton out of the box, not exactly earth-shattering stuff. (I use arch btw)
Zorin is just Ubuntu with a different DE and different pre-installed software. Pretty nice but not super unique. Lots of people seem to like it though.
