Simpleplanes Stock planes: A history of Simpleplanes Volume 2

19.6k StockPlanesRemastered  yesterday

In Volume 1, I covered the stock planes featured in Simpleplanes version 1.1. the builds were blocky, and had little detail. This all changed in Simpleplanes 1.2 with the introduction of the procedural fuselage and nose cone, as well as new engines and landing gear. The designs became more sleek. However, some designs had to be scrubbed due to new physics, or the new engines just not working with the designs, or simply a change in the expectations of the Jundroo team.

The TwinProp would make it's return, and this time it no longer resembled the Cessna 414. With a new sleek cockpit and fuselage and swept wings, it now resembled.. well... Nothing that was ever built that's known of. However, If i had to put my finger on it I'd say Willie Messerschmidt got ahold of an F7F and said "Hold my beer"... Or whatever they say in German. With a top speed of 315 mph and weighing in at 11500 lbs, it's as if someone took an ME262 and gave it the engines of the BF110.
Trivia
-For 1.3 it would receive a minor upgrade, this time with a powerplant of two reversed turboprop engines. However, the 1.2 version still remains on Jundroos page unchanged.

The Vertigo would return, this time looking a little more like a VTOL fighter jet. It featured swept wings, a sleek fuselage and twin jump engines, and a loaded weight of 13000 lbs.
Trivia:
-Like the other jets, It has a conventional tail control surface.
-With a length and wingspan of just 6 feet smaller, it is the closest in size to it's real world counterpart.
-the real Harriers are powered by a single turbofan. However, the Vertigo is powered by two turbojets.
-When autopilot is engaged, the thrusters snap down 90 degrees, destabilizing flight.

The Sea Plane by Philip Tarpley would return, this time with the much beefier 2000 hp radial engine and 4 blade prop. unfortunately it suffered from the drag of it's massive pontoons and only had a top speed of 200 mph.

The P-51 Returned, this time rocking a 1000hp engine, 3 blade prop, and retractable landing gear. However, It's shape was still vastly different from a real P-51 and it lacked the Iconic belly oil cooler. this was no matter as it's loaded weight of just over 4000 lbs gave it a top end at altitude of a respectable 430 mph.
Trivia:
- while shorter than the real Mustang, the Stock P-51 had a broader wing span, keeping it a decent plane for training.
-In build 1.3, it would receive a very minor upgrade in it's construction, and to the cockpit for cosmetics, and new paint. However, Philip Tarpley never updated the xml for the P-51 On the website, and that one still retains it's yellow and blue paint, block build and razorback cockpit.
-The original yellow, blue and silver paint with a white stripe on the fuselage and wings is very reminiscent of the USAAC and US NAVY's peace time training paint schemes before World War Two.

The F-18 By developer weebabyseamus would make a short lived career as a stock plane. weighing in at 20000 lbs, and featuring a length of 39 feet and wingspan of 30 feet. It had a top speed of just over 1000 mph at altitude.
Trivia
The F-18 lacked a "flying tail" all moving tail plane.
-For update 1.3, the F-18 would be fazed out for licensing reasons, and replaced with the wasp.
-weebabyseamus ended up building a (Very Good) replica of the F-18.

The KickingFish By Boxglow would make its debut, featuring a single afterburning turbofan, and cranked delta wings, and four inlet blocks. It had a wingspan of 36 feet to a length of 31 feet and a loaded weight of 9800 lbs. It also rocked an at altitude top speed of 1500 mph. It would keep it's design until version 1.9.
Trivia
-The Kicking Fish's wings and fuselage shape are very reminiscent of the F-16.
-Despite hosting an afterburning engine and capacity for flying well above mach 2, like the F-18 It featured conventional tail control surfaces, instead of the "Flying Tail" Used on jets like the F-16.

With the introduction of rotators, a new showcaser had to be introduced. enter, the Bush Plane also by weebabyseamus. Inspired by the single engine STOL planes of the Ozarks, This plane is light and has a very short takeoff run despite being the size of a fighter plane. It is also the first stock plane to feature a rudimentary open cockpit.
Trivia
-The paint scheme, although not much else, seems to be inspired by the Piper J-3 cub.

Note on version 1.3: Simpleplanes comes to steam, making acquisition of the game much easier for pc customers. Between the beginning of the 1.3 era and the beginning of 1.4, Many new parts and feature would be implemented.

@Boeing727200F @Graingy and when I tell you I was disappointed when I saw the variety of planes... I went and downloaded the old ones t have SOMETHING more to fly. (I had an iPhone 4 at the time which is a potato to even the newest ipod nano)

Would’ve preferred metric units, but otherwise not bad.
