@TheLoadingGorilla Acknowledged.
@Graingy Sorry, didn't mean to get religious there, just trying to explain how integrated Latin is in my school.
@TheLoadingGorilla In honesty, I try to avoid engaging with topics pertaining or relating to religion.
They say that if you have nothing pleasant to say, say nothing at all.
@Graingy My words are clumsy.
@TheLoadingGorilla hm
My Latin teacher doesn't only teach me Latin. He teaches me theology, logical reasoning and critical thinking, philosophy, economics, social hacks and all kinds of life-lessons and random (but very helpful) tips... stuff like that.
It's very hard to summarize what he teaches and this list barely does it justice, but that’s the best I could do.
@Graingy Do you mean "not used"? If so, there are a few reasons.
1. My school is classical. Like, very classical, so it's pretty much inevitable that you will take at least one year of Latin if you go there. Also, it's a Christian school and Latin was the language of many Saints and great writers that are studied today (it was the language of the Romans so it spread and it was still widely used by scholars in the Middle Ages. Latin and Greek were widely viewed as the language of the educated because the New Testament was written in Greek [if I remember correctly] and Latin was widely spoken and written in.). It's hard to explain exactly how ingrained into the school Latin is.
2. I love my Latin teacher. He teaches much more than Latin in the 90 minutes I see him every week. If I had any other Latin teacher it would be unbearable and I might have asked to drop out.
3. This might not make sense, but it's not primarily learning Latin. It's about learning how to think critically and begin to understand how complex the world is. It's not learning that "nauta is a regular first declension masculine word that means sailor", because nauta≠sailor. Instead it's learning that nauta was the word they used for a man who rides on a boat for a living. It's learning the nuance of language and seeing the roots English has in Latin. It's learning how to think through complex things and learning to work hard. It's learning how to challenge yourself and "expand your mind" in a way. It has definitely expanded my mind, and I also have a better vocabulary and can understand the meaning of new words because of roots and stuff that’s related to Latin. I don’t know how to describe it... my Latin teacher explained it very well but I don’t remember his exact words. I might study linguistics if I’m being serious, that stuff just fascinates me.
@TheLoadingGorilla Hm. Why did you start with a language that's now used?
Seems like it'd be better spent effort to learn something that's still useful, no?
I dislike learning the language, but the actual Latin class is absolutely the most fun class I've ever had.
@Graingy I have to take at least 2 years of a foreign language, and I took a year of Latin last year, so it "made sense" for me to take another year of Latin (I also love my Latin teacher, he's actually awesome). In reality it's "simple" to learn what I’m learning, but it does take time and gets rather tedious (especially reviewing vocabulary and stuff like that).
@TheLoadingGorilla Latin is especially difficult, or so I've heard.
Why are you learning it?
(At the moment) I "know" some Latin, but it's pretty much just reading and writing also. I can't for the life of me pronounce any of it... Learning a new language is hard :/
@Graingy Ooh subterranean communication, how fancy.
@TheLoadingGorilla Used to know a minute (non-conversational) amount of French (reading only), though I've forgotten basically all of it.
So, no, unfortunately. Not counting MSC (Martian Subterranean Communication).
Do you know any languages other than English?
