Episode 8: A Vengeful Shrine Maiden
The next morning starts out quite intense. Energy gun, missile and jet sounds can be heard all over the sky. But it’s no attack or defense, it’s just Reimu practicing with her new weapons: The Shredder energy gun, airborne emp and electromagnetic missiles. Reimu fights with about 10 target drone per wave, she practices up to 5 different waves. Doing so helps her increase her gun firing accuracy, the great thing about The Shredder is that its ammo is infinite: it’s battery only holds 35 rounds, but recharge/reload only takes 2 seconds and it can recharge infinitely as long as the aircraft is still active. Its fire rate is up to 990 rpm which means it can drain its whole battery in just 2 seconds. The bullet can also cut through anything regardless of the material and the part that the bullet flies through will completely disappears. During the practice, Reimu sprayed a whole magazine at a drone and only its wings are undamaged, almost the whole fuselage and engine completely disintegrated and bursted into flame. After the practice, Reimu lands at her shrine first, gets out and goes inside to get something before taking off again and lands at SAAC. Then Reimu gets out of her plane and goes into the hangar to eat lunch and get some rest.
At 2:30, Reimu is woken by Sokolóv and then he talks with Reimu:
Sokolóv: “Reimu, I need you to listen carefully okay?”
Reimu: “Yes.”
Sokolóv: “All those weapons, all those practices, they’re all for you to do what you want the most.”
Reimu: “What I want… wait… you’re telling me that I will fight with Grim Reaper?”
Sokolóv: “Correct, I woke you up early so you can prepare yourself both physically and mentally to fight him and his squadron. Here’s the plan: My squadron will fly straight to Japan to lure Shinigami’s squadron out, then, we will try lure them far away from their country, then one of our ships will hack their planes and trick them to fly here, it will be a one way trip for them, what happens next, is up to you, Reimu.”
After the short conversation, Sokolóv goes to prepare. At 4 pm, with all planes have external fuel tanks on their wings, Squadron X takes off from Gensokyo and flies to Japan. At the same time, a frigate from the RSNF is sent out to follow them and hacks the enemy’s planes.
Shtorm’s captain: “Hey, Sokolóv, I’ve heard that the entire Orochi squadron already has new advanced fighter jets, be careful out there.”
Sokolóv: “Don’t worry, it’s always the pilot, not the plane.”
Captain: “Alright.”
The Squadron X flies to Japan at 800km/h since they want to lure the Orochi Squadron out, if they go straight to Japan and attack a base just to lure them out, after they’ve fought each other, Japan is still too close and the Orochi squadron will know where to return even if their HUD is hacked.
After almost 30 minutes of flying, the Shtorm’s captain speaks with the squadron.
Captain: “All aircrafts, attention, we’ve able to pick up 8 signals on the radar, flying in a B-2 formation!”
Sokolóv: “Oh boy here we go. Can you identify the signals?”
Captain: “Uhh… 4 of them are Mitsubishi F-3, 2 are Mitsubishi ATD-X, the other two are F-35, I believe that’s the F-35JX because he escaped from the Shokaku, and the other one is… wait, is that an F-22 signal…?”
Sokolóv: “F-22? It must be Shinigami’s new plane.”
Captain: “Alright, they’re close, I will cut off the radio for you to concentrate, you still know what to do right?”
Sokolóv: “Yes, fight with them to lower their ammo, then pretend to lose and retreat. You know what to do next right, Niko?”
RF 20386’s captain (Niko): “Yes sir!”
Sokolóv: “Alright…”
Shinigami: “We’ve been planning on attack Gensokyo again and take you down for good, but I didn’t expect you to come bother us instead. You will pay for what you did.”
Sokolóv: “Heh, now that’s the Grim Reaper I know. Alright… LET’S DANCE!!!”
After the trigger words are spoken, all planes break from their formations and start fighting. Again, Roza, Orlóv and Terminator, each have to take on two at the same time, Volkóv fights with the F-35JX and Sokolóv fights with Shinigami. Shinigami’s plane this time is an aircraft known as the F-22JX Kai Raptor, It’s an F-22 with canards and Shinigami’s signature black and grey digital camouflage. However, this time Squadron X struggles to get any hit on the enemy and so do them. The battle is quite intense and Shinigami’s aura can be felt all the way from Gensokyo. After they’ve finished fighting, Sokolóv tells Squadron X to retreat and fly back to Gensokyo. Orochi Squadron also flies in formation again and returns to Japan, but little do they know, their HUD is already hacked. After the Japan’s direction is given to them, the radio from Japan to them is completely disabled and the compass on their HUD shows the direction they were told to fly to, but they’re actually flying to Gensokyo instead.
Sokolóv: “Reimu, be ready okay? We’re going back. By the way, I just noticed that Shinigami is actually quite clumsy in his new plane, clearly he hasn’t gotten used to it yet. We intentionally fought a bit worse to make them think that they’re good with their new planes. I’ve flown a lot of planes since I joined the air force, that means in reality, he’s way worse than we thought. This is a massive advantage for you Reimu.”
At Gensokyo, Reimu is already on the runway, ready to take off. Time slowly passes, Reimu nervously waiting for a signal to take off. And finally.
Sokolóv: “Reimu, take off, we’re nearly there, they’re behind us too.”
Reimu takes off, the light from the sunset reflects on her plane, giving it a slight yellow color. Reimu takes a deep breath and turns off the weapon’s safety switch.
Shinigami: “Wait a minute… i-is that… are we flying in the right direction…?”
Right after he says that, the HUD glitches before showing the actual direction they’re flying, showing that they’re actually flying North. His expression shows clearly what he’s thinking: (Shit, we’ve been tricked.). Squadron X slows down to come into his view, Shinigami looks at them in anger.
Sokolóv: “Welcome to Gensokyo, a place of peace, a place of happiness. The sunset is beautiful right? Because it is the last sunset you will ever see in your life. You came here, you’ve killed thousands of innocent civilians and soldiers. You’ve brought pain to many families. And let me tell you, you can’t just come to someone’s home, kill their parents and go away like that, someone here has a word with you, keep flying straight ahead.”
After he finishes, the Squadron X rolls their planes upside down and pitches down, out of Orochi Squadron’s sight. Shinigami looks at them before looking up again, he sees something, he squints his eyes to try and see it more clearly. From his view, a small silhouette can be seen on the burning sunset, it’s Reimu, her plane flies straight at them, almost motionless. Reimu flies pass the squadron head-on, next to Shinigami. When they pass by each other, Shinigami looks at the unknown aircraft, he notices the red butterfly emblem on the tail, he suddenly remembers the red and black MiG-29 he shot down 23 years ago which also had the exact same insignia, he rethinks about what Sokolóv just said, his face expresses anxiety, nervousness, fear and shock, but there’s nothing he can do, this is a one way trip for him, and he now has to fight a shrine maiden fueled by hatred and revenge. Reimu flies by the squadron, after a while more, her eyes glows red, she forces her MiG-41 into a cobra, then flips it upside down, turns on afterburner and starts chasing the entire squadron. She opens the Shredder and fires at them, forcing them to break and spread out. Then she starts chasing 2 of the 4 F-3s and within just 20 seconds, she takes them out with 2 electromagnetic missiles, both planes burst into flame and falls into the ocean. The rest then tries to take turn firing at her continuously, however, Reimu is too good, she’s even better than Sokolóv which means she’s certainly better than Shinigami as well, no missile or bullet can hit her plane. Within 2 more minutes, the remaining F-3s also burst into flame and falls into the sea, 4 planes remaining. At the same time, Squadron X has already landed and all the pilots, Masayoshi, Yukari and Sanae run outside to see the battle. Sokolóv says in surprise: “4 planes down already? Hell, it’s quite tough to take on 2 planes all by myself.”. After shooting down all the F-3s, she starts targeting the ATD-Xs. One of them is Shinigami’s girlfriend and she’s the first one being targeted. She tries her best to avoid being in front of Reimu, but it’s just not possible. In the panic, she does a 10 G’s turn and ends up passing out when she stops turning. Reimu lines up her sight and tears the ATD-X apart, eventually the fuel is ignited by the energy bullets. Shinigami watches in disbelief as his love’s plane becomes a massive fire ball in the air. The other ATD-X tries to revenge, but when it’s right behind Reimu, she does the same thing Roza did before to the F-2. She forces her MiG-41 into a backflip and keeps the nose pointing down while the enemy flies by beneath her. She opens fires and yet again another plane becomes a fireball, 2 planes left. The F-35JX also has no chance against her. After a short dogfight, the second to last missile leaves Reimu’s weapons bay and hits the enemy’s craft from the side, the plane is completely torn apart. “ONE PLANE LEFT, IT’S JUST YOU AND HIM NOW, TAKE HIM OUT!!!”, Sokolóv yells into the radio to tell Reimu that the fight is now a solo fight between her and Shinigami, one shall stand, one shall fall. After a while, Reimu is able to maneuver through the sky and ends up behind Shinigami. Then she activates the airborne EMP, completely shut down his electronic components, his weapons are inaccessible, his radar is completely black, his HUD doesn’t show up. Shinigami turns around and sees Reimu, he decides to does a cobra to get behind her. However, after his plane recovers from the cobra, Reimu is still not in his sight. He’s confused, Reimu used air brakes to stay behind him while he’s doing the cobra. The last missile leaves the weapons bay and hits the F-22JX tail, breaks the stabilators and thrust vectoring nozzles off. Shinigami now has no control, the plane flies straight aimlessly. The Shredder pops up and starts shooting, since she’s quite far, not all bullets hit him but it’s still ripping his plane apart. One vertical tail falls off, then both engines falls out of the plane, then one of the main wings is cut in half. Shinigami quickly looks for the ejection button and presses it, then crosses his arms in front of his chest and wait to be ejected… But nothing happens. He presses the button again and again to the point he starts spamming it. But it’s the end for him, a purple energy bullet passes right through the cockpit, the burning fuel from the fuel tank behind him pours into the cockpit, his eyes opens wide in shock, the fire takes over the cockpit. The last thing Shinigami sees, is fire completely covers his view. When the amount of burning fuel is enough, the pressure expands inside the cockpit and explodes, popping the canopy opens. The planes burst into a massive fireball and falls down to the ground like meteor. The F-22 hits the ground and all the unused missiles inside the plane creates a massive explosion.
Sokolóv: “That’s… the end of it.”
Reimu’s eyes stop glowing red and return to normal. She takes a deep breath and returns to SAAC airport.
After landing, she taxies to the outdoor parking area, however, her plane doesn’t turn to the parking space, it just randomly stops in place, Reimu just sit there in her plane, the canopy is already opened, but she doesn’t get out. Sokolóv comes to check if everything is alright. He pushes the stairs next to the canopy and climbs up. He sees Reimu is sitting still, she’s looking at something on the instrument panel. It’s the picture of her family, unknown when it was taped on. Her mouth whispers: “Mom… dad… I did it…”. “Reimu, go get some rest, it has been another rough day for you.”, Sokolóv says. Reimu takes a deep breath and gets out of her plane and goes into the hangar, a car also comes out to drag the plane into the hangar. The balance of power has shifted again.
