Results of the Can-Am Challenge!

28.3k 32  5 months ago

Alrighty, so a while back, I created a challenge for the Can-Am series. In case you aren't familiar, the idea is a racing series (that actually happened) that has virtually no restrictions or limitations. With that in mind, judging was based on 2 criteria, Performance and Realism. Every single entry into the challenge was very well made, and I had a blast driving these around the track. Without further ado, here are the entries!

1st Place

Tingly06822's submission

This car truly shows the work of someone who lives and breathes cars. I can just tell how much loving attention to detail was put into this thing. and the results show. I give it a 10/10 for realism. While fictional, this thing still very much looks and feels like it should actually exist, and the modeling, including a realistic rear engine setup, is the cherry on top. This thing is amazing just to look at, and this one is definitely going into my saves. As for performance, this gets a 9/10, being definitely the most realistic performing car in the challenge. 1 point is docked because of how hard it is to control (ik ik it's realistic but it does make it difficult), but overall this thing is a work of art. Expect Gold Prix lap times somewhere around the 1:00-1:15 mark with a bit of practice.

2nd Place

Hoptro Devildog by Sm10684

What an absolute beast of a car. This thing regularly made it over 200 mph, and could still corner pretty well even at high speeds. 10/10 performance wise. As for realism, this thing is quite cool, and it managed a solid 8/10, I really like the level of detail this thing achieves in its very unique form. While the car is quite striking and undoubtably performs quite well, two main things made it lose a couple of points. 1: the acceleration and turning are a bit snappier than they should be. This isn't a huge issue, and certainly for a videogame the performance is quite reasonable, but it is a bit hard to believe that something this big (almost 2 tons) can accelerate that quickly. 2: The design does look quite good. The proportions remind me of the Batmobile from The Batman, but I do have one concern. For 1970, the glass on the front is way too curvy. It's a bit hard to believe that something that old would have something that would be hard, even by today's standards, to pull off. Still a phenomenal vehicle though, you did a really great job and you certainly earned 2nd place.

3rd Place

Chaparral 2J by ToeTips

This is a very good car, and it is definitely the best 2J on the site as far as I can tell. Performance wise, this thingy got a ?/10. While it was quite good, I really have no context for how a car with literal fans on the bottom should perform. Really though, it was quite good, and I was able to hit a sub-1 minute lap time on Gold Prix. Realism wise, this gets an 8/10. While not exactly photorealistic, it does get the image across, and you did a great job with part efficiency, with it coming in at just 187. Fewer parts than my 4Runner, and it looks far more realistic. Really great job on this one! I can't really point out anything explicitly wrong with it. The tilt control is kinda cool, but on mobile it's pretty hard to steer and use it at the same time, so I didn't even bother with it for the most part. Phenomenal car, this 3rd place is well deserved. I have zero bad things to say about this car.

The other three entries, are all very good, and they collectively tied at 4th, all receiving 8/10 in both areas.
LunchBox's entry certainly gets an honorable mention. While it did happen to be overshadowed by some of the very talented competition, this thing is very fun to drive around. I would recommend it to anyone looking for something unique and mobile-friendly. It's got the perfect amount of detail, and the performance, while a bit more on the arcadey side, feels very good to drive.

The Checker CH-002 by LamborghiniCheeseWedge was quite fun to drive around. I really like the unique design, and the handling, while nothing special, was certainly adequate and did not dissapoint. Great car here, no major complaints.

The AC-Rank by FOXHOUND26 is very good. It has the smoothest handling in this challenge, and it felt very much like a tank that had been turned into a racecar. While it's dubious whether or not this belongs in a challenge devoted to Can-Am racing, this thing has impeccable vibes, and I certainly didn't regret my time driving it around.
Interestingly enough, FOXHOUND26 is the only PC player participating in the challenge, so I am giving them a prize of a copy of either Gotham Knights, Left 4 Dead, or Mad Max, their choice.

A shame I posted my 917 style car after this challenge ended, I could have made a can am style conversion of the car…

Plus the amphibious ability would be cool.

@ToeTips that's true. I could go for a pretty angular sci-fi build, ditching the default canopy part would give me a lot more freedom design-wise.

Hmm depends on where you want to take the design, I would advise checking Silver panzers builds to get some inspiration.

@ToeTips ooh yeah, I definitely would join that one. My first build was actually a pretty cool concept in my opinion, although my current skills might not be enough to make it too much better.

    A first build remaster challenge.
Basically take your first build and remaster it with your current skills. Also yeah, participate is a lot more fun than hosting lol.

@ToeTips ah, that makes sense. The ?/10, isn't a bad thing per se, after all with coming in 3rd you didn't do too bad lol

I was dead when I saw the ?/10 cause like you I had no clue on how a fan car was supposed to handle. Also the tilt thing was supposed to be both side but the actuators were tweaking. I didn't want to fix it before now cause it would feel like cheating.

@FOXHOUND26 Congratulations, as the only PC player in the challenge, you have won a Steam Key for your choice of one of the following games:
    Gotham Knights
    Left 4 Dead
    Mad Max

These games are all ones that I have either a duplicate copy of, or simply am not interested in playing, so I decided I'd give them away to someone who might like one.
