Permission or avaliablility of SimplePlanes aircraft?

3,749 offiry  1.8 years ago

I recently have gotten into animation a bit and have done some basic things, but I would like to really animate something bigger. I realized yesterday that aircraft can be exported correctly as an .obj file, as before when I opened it the only thing that shows is glass, sometimes instruments. I was not sure why and so thought it was broken, and didn't try porting to Blender or Unity. Finally figured out it's not broken.

I would like to make a SimplePlanes-esque animation - I feel familiar with the website and airplane-building methods, but I still am not very good at building aircraft. I have asked some people if I could use their aircraft, as some of them are very good and very varied builders.

Main reason of making this post is that I have read a conversation on this website regarding the use of SimplePlanes assets in general, as well as using other player's aircraft for commercial/noncommercial purposes with the permissions needed, but I did not see anything about SimplePlanes defauly aircraft. Some of these, like the EscortBomber, are quite recognizable as SP, and I feel like some people might enjoy that. I likely, if using other aircraft, will be using their Simple versions as the port gives every single semi-part as its own piece, but I really only want to use the bomber.

If anyone knows more specifics about this, please comment. Thank you. If you can supply aircraft, thank you too lol. :D

    @offiry That would be fine.

    @Ren Will check the account, thanks for that tip - I remembered it to be player-made, but I completely forgot lol

    Likely won't be using the model as WolfHunter9111 has graciously provided me with permission to use AI ASAP models

    Thank you for all of your comments, I am of course not planning on monetizing off of anything, just some animation experiments of my own. I would think that posting it publicly on say, Youtube, as long as it isn't monetized and that it is fully credited and of course mentioned as derived from SimplePlanes should be ok. Please correct me if I am wrong, I am awfully lacking in knowledge of this department.

    I think it's just you can't make money of anything in SP, like you can't sell 3D models as your own.

    @offiry if I remember right, the EscortBomber is a modification of WalrusAircraft's B52

    @offiry anything made in SimplePlanes cannot be monetized

    Unless if used for commercial purposes.

    Actually to add to that, I also play Ravenfield, and while playing that I have realized that a user by the name of Mr2002 is actually converting, modding and making SP aircraft into mods for the workshop, with gyros and default parts still visible inside the vehicle. I realized this recently, as xraying into the model yields parts and meshes, while usually models are completely hollow inside. I'm not sure what this constitutes as, but is an interesting side note on this topic.

    @asteroidbook345 I would suppose that user-created builds only involving things like fuselages should be fine? I am not sure what constitutes as Simpleplanes, as fuselages can also be made in almost an exact fashion with modeling software. I think that maybe cockpits and other more special, detailed parts are definitely part of SP, though. If SP is regarded as say, a modeling software, then if I make a simple aircraft using only fuselages and nothing else, for example, then it should be considered free usage? Not sure as SP technically is a game and the fuselage "concept" is likely original and from SP. However I do think that at least in-game default models and models made by other players, or any model that has SP-recognizable parts should get permission first. I don't think I will be making any money, more like a hobby project, but I still greatly appreciate the feedback. Will definitely reflect on that.

    You can't make money off them or 3d printed models of them. Some guy was trying to sell CADs of SP builds and that got shut down

    @AndrewGarrison
    I know you're the lead dev and I have seen another conversation between you and s5ehfr9 as well as spefyjerbf here: https://www.simpleplanes.com/Forums/View/879115/A-Question-On-Exported-Models
    and I was wondering who, if by developer or player, made the EscortBomber model? Not sure how I can get permission to use it or if it is possibly a part of copyright of the SimplePlanes game and Jundroo as a whole. I don't necessarily have to use it if permission can't be granted, I understand this is a complicated subject when going into possibly commercial territory. Hoping for a swift reply. :D
