It's not as simple as that. There are a lot of technical difficulties and things to consider. I'm sure the devs got the message that the community wants multiplayer though.
There is a big forum post about this, it is probably the most-requested feature and shows up regularly in the forums. There is a multiplayer mod in progress, too.
