[MOD REQUEST] SubAssem Menu Overhaul - Ways to Organize/Sort

I know there is a "search" function in the Sub Assembly menu, which is great, but that only aids us if we happen to remember what we would've called a subassembly during its creation! I do my best, but even then I sometimes can't recall the name and would end up slogging through my entire list... Even then, who knows if what I've named it properly conveys what it even IS?! lol

Some might have alternative ideas for ways to organize/sort them, but here are mine to kick things off:
#1 - Expandable Categories
This would work like that in various programs, be it a [+] or [>] that when clicked is [-] or [v], whereby the category expands to show all its contents. For this, I think it might be ideal to have it remember which ones are open/expanded for the entire game-session (ie, remember until the game is restarted, not just in between spawning your build).
Whether or not these would be user-creatable categories or predetermined, is up for discussion. The former would be best, but latter probably easier? So assuming it ends up being predetermined categories, here's my current shortlist:

  • Wings
  • Bodies (Hulls? Fuselages?), Landing Gear (Mechanical?)
  • Cockpit
  • Propulsion
  • Weapons
  • Other/Unsorted
  • maybe three extras: Land, Sea, Air... for nigh fully-complete assemblies (ie escape boats for a ship, or deployable UAV/squadrons)

HOW to get them into the categories will need some brainstorming, as I'm not sure if the menu system would support drag-and-drop style?
However, one thing I think would be ideal is that there'd be a new "Save" dialog box. It'd be a bit larger in both length and width (to properly see longer names) so that various radio options can be provided for each category. Or if people would like the ability to 'save' them to multiple categories, then checkboxes instead of radio dots.

My thinking is that if the user does not define a category during saving the SubAssem that it will automatically get placed under "Other/Unsorted", or, alternatively this could just be selected (visually) by default, but either way they'd end up there if nothing was picked.

#2 - Sorting of Contents
I can think of 3 that would be nice, but 2 that would be must-have: "Alphanumerically" (how it is now... sort of), and "Date Created" (like DesignerSettings does for Saves), with the third (if this is possible) being sorted by "Frequency of Use".
Toggling between them I guess could be handled by a single button at the top of the menu? Or perhaps 2 buttons, one to cycle through the options and another that lets you do Ascending and Descending? (though I imagine that might not be used enough to merit the time it'd take to code it heh)

#3 - T.B.A.

That's all for now... Thoughts? Additions? Changes?

More importantly... Anyone feel up to it?

@PlaneFlightX *le gasp* Well that's. unfortunate.

I mean, the fact remains that not everyone would be capable of doing it that way like they could with a simple-to-use mod, even IF someone happens to still posess this Lost Knowledge of the XML to bestow upon us again (which I would still be interested in, eitherway...) :D
Guess that makes the need for such an in-game menu method (ie this mod) all the more important!! heh
