Since we have replicas of so many planes now, this might just end up like an encyclopædia of aircraft. Two things that might be able to counter that:
include fictional creations if the creator writes a backstory for it. This would probably need a lot of curation, though.
Include links to the pages of the replicas, along with a couple of basic things about each replica. Even if it was just the number of upvotes and an image, that would be miles better than the current search function.
But yeah I think there is potential in the idea!
