Sikorsky R4

11.7k ForwardUntoDawn  2 months ago

The Sikorsky R-4 is a two-seat helicopter designed by Igor Sikorsky with a single, three-bladed main rotor and powered by a radial engine. The R-4 was the world's first large-scale mass-produced helicopter and the first helicopter used by the United States Army Air Forces, the United States Navy, the United States Coast Guard and the United Kingdom's Royal Air Force and Royal Navy.

Features

  • Quick 2 day build since I wanted a break from the Dune Ornithopter. I built this with the intent of making a heli that was fun to fly even with just a keyboard, without any stabilizing gyros
  • Completely VR compatible cockpit with excellent visibility
  • stable, accurate top speed
  • robust suspension; don't worry about setting her down too hard

Controls

  • AG 1: Main rotor
  • AG 2: rotate main rotor forward to achieve higher forward speeds
  • AG 3: Navigation lights
  • AG 4: airbrakes for slowing approach speed
  • Throttle: rotor collective
  • Trim: yaw trim
  • all instructions are labeled in the cockpit and found in craft instructions

@AndrewGarrison thank you! The wheel tweak is fine, glad it works better for VR now!

I have updated the XML on this post to fix an issue with the wheels jittering in VR due to the lower physics timestep. I was able to fix it by reducing sideways friction on the wheels. If you are not okay with this tweak, let me know and I can revert the change, but I would also need to remove the curated status.

    Curator's notes

This thing is somehow almost perfectly scaled for VR, I would suggest using this aircraft's cockpit as reference

By the way, i like those helicopters witout gyros ..

@ForwardUntoDawn i always do that when the landing gear was crashing the plane. Because I use simpla planes on low physics..

@ForwardUntoDawn that will work i think

@ForwardUntoDawn I think it would be better if u add more connections in the main wheels of the aircraft, like just connect it to a random fuselage that is close to the wheels.

@AndrewGarrison thanks for the advice! I'll try testing it on my phone on low physics to see if adding some dead weight works

I tried it out on my Quest 2 and this is a great build for VR. The only issue I have is the landing gear jitter on low-quality (mobile) physics. We are investigating if there's anything we can do to help with this problem, but one workaround is to add some additional deadweight mass to the wheel assemblies.

I wonder why no helicopter like this Sikorsky ever get featured in WWII films?
