About the history of Mcdonnell Douglas MD-90

The MD-90 is the largest member of the Douglas/McDonnell Douglas/Boeing DC-9/MD-80/MD-90/717 family, and is a stretched, IAE V2500 powered development of the MD-80. The MD-90 program was launched in November 1988, first flight occurred on February 22 1993, and certification was awarded on November 16 1994. Launch customer was Delta, which has 31 on firm order, while other major customers include Saudi Arabian Airlines and Japan Air System. Most important of the changes introduced on the MD-90 are the two V2500 turbofans. At 111kN (25,000lb) thrust on the MD-90-30, the V2500s are the largest, heaviest and most powerful engines to be rear mounted on any airliner yet. More importantly though, the V2500 is highly regarded for its efficiency and fuel economy. Other changes to the MD-90 include the 1.4m (4ft 6in) fuselage stretch forward of the wing, allowing seating for an extra 10 passengers (in a two class arrangement). The stretch is forward of the wing to compensate for the extra weight of the engines. The MD-90 also features an EFIS glass flightdeck based on that in the MD88, and other detail improvements such as a revised passenger interior. The basic MD-90 model is the MD-90-30 (Chinese built Trunkliners are designated the MD-90-30T and feature double bogey main landing gear). It is also offered in MD-90-30ER extended range form with extra fuel. The MD-90 has also been offered as the 50, a further extended range version with a higher maximum takeoff weight and extra fuel and the MD-90-55 high capacity variant capable of seating 187 in a single class with two extra doors in the forward fuselage to meet emergency evacuation requirements. Following the 1997 merger of Boeing and McDonnell Douglas, Boeing decided to cancel MD-90 production once outstanding orders were fulfilled. The last of 114 US-built Md-90s was completed in 2000.

About the history of Great China Airlines Mcdonnell Douglas MD-90IGW(Increase Gross Weight)

With the announcement of the "Open Skies" policy by the Taiwan authorities at the end of 1987,and its establishment in March 1966, Great China Airlines, which had ceased its general aviation business due to poor management at the time, applied to the Civil Aviation Administration of China in 1988 along with TransAsia Airways to resume operations Due to the requirement for airlines to adopt new aircraft at that time, the price was relatively low, and interval passenger planes suitable for domestic medium-sized airport operations became the first choice And Dahua Airlines chose the De Havilland Canada DHC-8 series as its first generation service aircraft. With the smooth ordering and introduction of the DHC-8 series, Grrat China Airlines searched for new aircraft to opened up more routes. Therefore, in the spring of 1990, with the release of the MD-80 follow-up improved aircraft by McDonnell Douglas in 1989: MD-90. Great China Airlines ordered three MD-90 aircraft from McDonnell Douglas and customized Increase Gross Weight/IGW model MD-90 aircraft from McDonnell Douglas to cope with the multiple round trips of domestic flights in a day. It was expected to be used on routes from Taipei to Kaohsiung and Taipei to Tainan. However, in April 1994, Evergreen Group acquired 24% of Great China Airlines's stake to gain a share of the domestic airline market,After investing in Great China Airlines in 1996, in order to meet the total fleet size of MD-90 purchased by EVA Air at that time, the confirmed orders were reduced from the original 3 aircraft to the last 1 aircraft, And in March 1997, the world's only MD-90IGW aircraft was delivered to Great China Airlines with registration number B-15301. The maximum takeoff weight of this aircraft was 10000 pounds more than the 140000 pounds of other MD-90s from Uni Airways reaching 150000 pounds. Compared with the ordinary version, the fuselage and wing structure were strengthened, allowing the aircraft to have a longer range and carrying capacity. However, on July 1, 1998, in order to comply with the resource sharing policy of the Civil Aviation Administration of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, EVA Air merged Taiwan Airways and Great China Airlines into Uni Airways. The only jet airliner from Dahua Airlines was merged into Uni Airways with Great China Airlines. In February 1999, it was painted with the livery of Uni Airways In January 2001,after the new millennium, the registration number B-15301, which originally belonged to Great China Airlines, was changed to B-17926. In 2008, when the financial crisis arrived, B-17926 It was also included in the fleet of EVA Air and was eventually retired in August 2015. It then flew to the United States for storage in October and became the fuselage parts warehouse for Delta Air Lines MD-90 And the history of Great China Airlines' only jet airliner also came to an end here.

Wow, two good successors using the Atlasjet MD-80 in a week? I’m so used to seeing complete slop in my notifications that this has been a series of nice surprises. Looks good!

Edit: Those posters also look sick! Shame I can’t read a word of it though.

@qazedcujmyhn Yes, as I couldn't find any posters about Great China Airlines, I had to create them based on the cover of Airway Magazine and the poster of Uni Airways
