Supassed battleships as the main capial units of major fleets . In RKKF the need for more aircraft carriers was important as most
of the wartirne carrierS Were either laid uP due poor condtion or unsuitable for effective use of new fast jet aircrafts
Plans for new mediurn carrier was started in 1944 but after the war the shipbuilding industry was unable to cope with the needs of the navy and the plans were set on hold until 1950 when revisted design caled Project 85 was authorized . However the design was revorked to introduce new angled fight deck and stearn catapults and i was only in 1954 when the frst unt was laid down . The design reminsted of the US Essex class but was slghtly smaler . t carried heavy self - detence armarnent flted in sponsons on sides of the hul , Two stearn catapults were fitted in the bow .
5units were build and they acted as the main carrier force togehter with the Project 73 fleet carriers trough out the 60' s . The class recieved major reconstruction program in the 70' s
