OR-54
OR-54 is a lightweight stealth fighter developed by the Orlov Design Bureau for Soviet Union [alternate world] as a response to the American F-22 and F-35 programmes. The aircraft combines a stealth airframe with a compact, production friendly layout intended to minimise cost and manufacturing time. Consistent with Soviet design practice, OR-54 is equipped with a thrust vectoring nozzle that enables exceptional supermaneuverability. Its armament is carried in stealth weapon pods, preserving the aircraft’s stealth characteristics without unduly reducing its missile load.
Throughout its service life, OR-54 established itself as a dependable light stealth fighter. Although it does not surpass the most advanced Western fifth generation types in overall capability, it proved effective in its intended role and offered a favourable balance of performance, cost and rapid producibility, earning a reputation as a workhorse of the Soviet airforce. Western aircrew nicknamed the type “Flicker” because against their fourth generation fighter, it typically appeared only as a fleeting radar contact before using its manoeuvrability to prevail, while against their sophisticated fifth generation aircraft, it was liable to be detected only briefly before being engaged by advanced Western missiles.
