XM1155B1 Dragoon Self-Propelled Mortar
(1) activates main armament. (2) activates .50 cal. (3) activates water propulsion. Pitch and roll to steer, and VTOL and Trim for aiming. The XM1155B1 Self-Propelled Mortar is a Paternian mortar carrier, and a proposed component of the Dragoon family of 8x8 wheeled vehicles.
The vehicle is armed with a 120mm M215 smoothbore low-pressure breech-loading gun-mortar designed to be able to use at least the same warheads as the standard 120mm Mortar M90. The use of such systems is not new to the Paternian Armed Forces; some Commando armored cars used 60mm gun-mortar systems for counter-insurgency purposes. Trials were successful with the new vehicle, and units responded positively about it.
However, senators in the Paternian Federal Congress felt the program was over-budget and strayed from intended design goals, and the Government Accountability Office performed an audit. This vehicle and the self-propelled howitzer were the main targets.
The howitzer would be outright cancelled, but the mortar carrier was still seen as an asset. Thus, it was decided to develop a more traditional mortar carrier which was cheaper, retained most of the effectiveness, and employed a standard M90 mortar. The principal argument for this system was the direct fire capabilities, a fairly compelling point if it were not for the presence of the M1154 Zamburak self-propelled gun. The Zamburak was further along development and was armed with a lightened variant of the 120mm M9 smoothbore high-velocity tank cannon on the Victoria tank.
So this magnificent machine was cancelled, although some were exported to private military concerns and several nations.
