Mitsubishi A7M1 Prototype Reppu

26.5k KingOfTypos  one year ago

History

The A7M was designed to be a True Sucessor to the Legendary, but outdated A6M Zero. In late 1940 the Navy wanted Mitsubishi [and Horikoshi's team no less) to build a plane to Succeed the Zero's design, however there was no Engine available that was both compact and giving a high horsepower output, and thus was Halted [they were also busy with the A6M2b and a Interceptor request what would become the J2M Raiden].

The Request was continued in 1942 where the requirements were to have Speed, Climb rate and Manueverability [more or less that of the Zero]. The Engines for use [albeit still under development] were the Nakajima Ha-45(2000hp) and Mitsubishi Ha-43(2200), however the Latter was still under development, and so the Ha-45 was chosen.

6th May 1944, 4 years after the Navy's request, did only the A7M1 first flew and achieved promising results, however due to its Size, the Ha-45 Engine wasnt good enough to achieve its required Top Speed and development was Halted.

The Project was continued when the A7M2, fitted with the Ha-43 engine, flew in October in the same year and achieved all the desired requirements, and was Ordered by the Navy for production as the Reppu Type 11.
